Check your wheel gauging and your trackwork. It's one of those two. Use the N scale tool to check the wheel spacing and the track spacing, especially around turnouts.

Where on the pike and on what kind of track is it derailing?

Is it derailing on turnouts?  On curves?  What is the curve radius?  What number turnout?  If it is derailing on turnouts, are the turnouts close to curves?  Are the curves close to turnouts sharp curves?  Who is the manufactuer?  Is it derailing on rail joints?  Make sure that rail joiners are aligned properly.  Is it derailing on grades?  What is the per centage of the grade?  Who manufactured the track that you are using?

Is any other equipment deraiing in the places in which the pilots of your 4-8-2 derail?  What type of equipment is derailing?  Is this the light or heavy 4-8-2?

If we knew more, we might be able to give a better answer.
