I am just now getting up to date with the new technology. I have a collection of older model N Guage sets, all with the old style couplers.
My question is how hard is it to change and, what do I need to change them out?

There are a lot of variable to upgrading N scale couplers, even more than with HO. A lot depends on the car manufacturer, the time period it was made, and the style of coupler mounting used on the old couplers. If they are the ones that look like a square with one side opened up, they are generally referred to as "Rapido" style, for the company that first started using them.

The Micro-Trains web site has a fairly extensive list of their couplers and trucks to use for converting various manufacturers cars. Many N scale cars have their couplers mounted to the truck assembly. In those cases it's often faster, and easier, to replace the entire truck assembly with one mounting knuckle couplers.

If at first you don't succeed, throw it in the spare parts box.

Hi Jimthomason,

Depends on what you want.

If you want dummy knuckles, or working knuckles.
Difficulty is subjective.
Some basic tools will be needed
Pin vise
Tap and drills
Jeweler's screwdrivers
File
Wide flat blade screwdriver
A coupler height gage helps but not really required.
An assembly jig, again not necessarily required
If you buy already assembled it's much simpler.

And most of all patience and persistence.

My advice, standardize on one manufacturer but try them all before you decide.

Very dated but a good read never the less.
