weathering engines

hello can anyone tell me where the most common points on a steam engine that get dirt are?

Basically, you should try to find some photos of the kind of loco you are weathering, and use that as a guide.

Steam locomotives are one of those machines that can start the day very clean and wind up dirty.  Soot will dull a clean boiler jacket and mess up oil-and-graphite smoke box covering.  Dust from the roadbed will coat the wheels and running gear.  Mineral deposits from leaking steam will form streaks.

I wouldn't attempt to try this without having a few photos as a guide, preferably color photos.

Don't base your efforts on other's models.  You may wind up repeating their mistakes.
