I have item #91114,  2-4-2  w/coal Baldwin and tender w/smoke (Pennsylvania).
The loco is like new but the axle gear is cracked.  This item is now discontinued
and Bachmann parts cannot supply a new gear or axle with gear.
Is there anywhere that supplies replacement gears for this?

thanks,
David

Hi David,

the 2-4-2 is a neat little locomotive worthy of the effort to fix it, and I hope you can get it going.  The only other source I know of for a replacement gear would be NWSL ( http://www.nwsl.com/  )    I do not know if they have a stock gear that will work you will have to check it on their site. If not they do have a gear request form that might get you what you need.

If you are successful getting the gear please report back here so we can share it with others.

Good Luck,

Thanks Bill.
I will let you know if I have any luck.
The guy who owns this unit also has 2 new 2-8-0's that he got 4 years ago and never took out of the box.
He asked me to install revolution decoders,  but thy have cracked gears also. He had heard of the issue when he got the units so he had two gears from NWSL.  I installed one this morning.  it seems ok. Nylon I think.  I will contact them about the 2-4-2. I did not see it listed on their site.

David,

You may hav e to use the gear request form, but a phone call first may not hurt.

I think the NWSL gears are delrin,  I installed one on one of my 2-8-0s and it has been trouble free. Also did one for a friend and he has worked it hard with no problem so far.

Bill,

I finally got around to submitting a gear request form with NWSL
this morning.  I will let you know if they have when I hear back.

Bill,

Here is the reply I got.
Hopefully this will be a good replacement.

Hi David,

We currently do not make that gear nor will we;-----------------------Instead, and we're actually getting closer to releasing it, is a regearing kit for that engine (and its cousins, such as the 0-4-0) where you pull all the factory gearing out, re-use the factory motor, then install our kit. It'll take us a while to finish it but we've made some good progress.

Thanks!

David,

What a great piece of news!!  The early 2-4-2's are a great looking locomotive, and will be great candidates for this replacement.

Thanks for sharing!
