I cannot find any of the photographs of these two locomotives on line where I could post them here.

In the book The Locomotives Baldwin Built there are photographs of a pair of 2-foot gauge 2-8-2s. One was built for export to India and has a male worker standing next to it as a means of judging size. The caption is "the perfect locomotive for railfans.

The other 2-8-2 was a wood burner with a big stack and longish wheelbase. Built for a Central or South American line. Really nice looking locomotive as well.

Neither is "large" like a 3-foot gauge locomotive, but both would make great 30-inch gauge models.

Will continue to search for photos of these. If you have the book you can check the locomotives out yourself.

Try Southwest Narrow Gauge. They are a MMI Dealer and have some of the die-cast K-class locomotives in stock I believe.

Has anyone tried mounting a pair of Bachmann passenger trucks on the Maine long caboose?

I use couplers set at the On3 coupler height and will need to raise the caboose frame in order to do this but would like to visually retain some of the low slung look the model has.

I have never seen one of these models in person so have no idea if this is feasible. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I used the Tsunami and it works well. I used the light narrow gauge locomotive version, don't recall the sku number.

Size is a relative issue. For those modeling actual industrial railways, 24 inch lines or 30 inch lines, the ten-wheelers are huge and the OF 2-8-0, though based on an actual 30 inch prototype, is large.

For these who use On30 for poor man's On3, these are not giant locomotives. It just depends on what your little railroad empire calls for.

On30 / Re: Kadee couplers for Climax

Actually, while the castings are for HO scale couplers, it is meant to be used to aid in the process of raising couplers to On3 coupler height on models where this is not quite possible.

The Rio Grande used really large couplers but most narrow gauge railroads did not. Many had different coupler heights due to a variety of reasons. The prototype used these kinds of knuckles to resolve the problem.

This little kit/adaptor, is meant to do the same thing. If you look in one of the photographs you can see how much lower the coupler is mounted on the Bachmann tender yet it is able to couple with a coupler mounted at the On3 coupler height.

Should have explained things better.

Check this site:

http://www.foothillmodelworks.com/

The first page that comes up might have the solution to your problem.

I have a pair on order to address a similar problem as I raise all of my couplers to the On3 height as well.

It seems like a reasonable solution at a low cost and less work than carving up a casting or filing down a shank of a 803 KD - both of which I have done.

These new castings are nice. This is how the prototype dealt with mismatched coupler heights.

The link will take you directly to the home page and the new castings are the first thing you will see. Neat way to deal with this problem on models in On30.

On30 / Re: Heislers Release Delayed?
December 09, 2011, 03:51:05 PM
If it is, better the issue be dealt with NOW instead of after the models are on our lay-outs. So it would be worth the wait to not have to deal with the frustration the owners of Shays, Climaxes and railcars have had to deal with.

Have had to wait a long time for Bachmann to produce the Heisler, would rather wait a little longer to get one that runs like a watch!

From what I have heard the factory shuts down for a holiday in China and Bachmann does inventory here in the U.S. Not exactly the time for a new product to arrive and be released.

It's all good though. The Kentwood & Southern will get its first geared locomotive soon enough!

There were several 3 ft. gauge railroads in the Confederacy during the war.  Will have to pull out the history books and find which they were.

The Rio Grande was the best known advocate of the narrow gauge movement in the U.S. but not the only one.

On30 / Heisler - options available?
November 29, 2011, 01:41:44 PM
Mr. Bachmann,

It will be time to order Heislers soon. What options will be available in terms of color scheme, lettering etc?

Also, any photos forthcoming for us to drool over?

Thanks!

On30 / Can we see some detail photos of the new Heisler?
November 24, 2011, 09:33:10 PM
Mr. Bachmann,

Is there any way you could take and post some photos showing the various details, etc, of the test model of the new Heisler?

Any word on the paint schemes?

Thanks!

Just for fun - what is your favorite On30 locomotive that Bachmann manufactures? Limit ONE! ;D

Mine is the OF 4-4-0!

This is a great locomotive. Sigh, after the Heisler, I would eventually shell out for one of these when funds become available.
