On30 / Base for 4-4-0 Rushton stack
May 05, 2016, 09:53:22 AM
Still looking for bits and pieces for a 4-4-0. This time it's a base for a Rushton stack. Pipe from generator for it would save a trip to the hobby shop for wire. Bet Big Lars has both, but all replies are welcome. Guess I'm going for the Mount Blue wood cab as an answer for that.  Could use a coal board for the longer tender too. I think this is a bit wider than the other.

Thanks. That would SEEM to be a good source. I've assembled a Banta kit for my 2-8-0. They're very well done, but, unfortunately, they don't offer one for the 2-4-0. I was hoping someone had one in their parts box. I should have added "needed" to my posting.

The first thing I checked was the Bachmann Parts Department. Even asked if they had an odd one laying around. Have not yet heard back.

By the way, I'm one of the fortunate who had the opportunity to meet Lee. Every complement posted is well deserved. We all will miss him. Just hope a wise person steps up to keep our On30 going. Guess I'm a bit obsessive, but I have all the steam with sound. Where were these gems when I was in model railroading in my youth....

On30 / Re: HELP! I need parts to restore a Shay

My grateful thanks to Biglars for finding the pieces I needed for my Shay in his parts box. Bachmann's message board is, indeed, a gift to us modelers!

Thanks, Royce, I had assumed the parts I need would need to be keyed to the fittings on the Shay and thus be required to be Bachmann parts. I'll head to PCM and see what comes up.

BUT, if someone can help me with original Bachmann parts, I'd still prefer to go that way.

On30 / HELP! I need parts to restore a Shay
November 22, 2013, 11:26:58 AM
I acquired an orphaned Shay that's in need of parts no longer available from the Bachmann parts department. It runs and sounds fine but needs:

Smokestack (I'd be glad for either a straight or diamond one)

Wood load and side and back boards

Front footboard and brackets

Sand hopper

Headlight and bracket, prefer the visored one, but will settle for another option.

Yes, I've been looking on eBay; no luck. If anyone can help or point me in the right direction or has a junker they'd like to sell, I'd really appreciate it. I have several other Shays and would really like to get this one back on the rails.

Thanks for any help you can provide with parts or suggestions.

On30 / Consolidation "sound ready?"

Is the On30 Consolidation set up for the 8 pin Tsunami Plug & Play sound board?

On30 / how do I mount the cab?
November 14, 2013, 05:08:49 PM
I'm working on a conversion of the On30 Consolidation. To see where I'm going, search:

Westernizing a Bachmann On30 2-8-0-new Banta Round-top cab

Instead of heading west, I'm aiming for a reasonable facsimile of No. 6 of the WW&F, predecessor of the SR&RL, or, perhaps the SR&RL No. 23, both outside frame units.

I'm just finishing up the Banta round-top cab and it occurred to me, how do I fasten the boiler/cab unit to the frame? The original cab has the two hooks at the rear that fit into slots in the cab floor with the cab screwed to the boiler and the screw in front holding the entire superstructure to the frame. But, with no hooks on the Banta cab, how do I secure it to the frame without permanently gluing it?

On30 / Got 'em!
October 25, 2013, 10:51:01 AM
A few months ago I sent in for repair a On30 Forney a friend had dropped, knocking off a cylinder and damaging the drive rods. I had included the requested check for $30 to cover shipping, etc.
This Monday I was contacted by the repair department asking if it would be permissible to replace the Forney rather than repair it. Another friend had installed a Soundtraxx unit in it, unfortunately, not the micro unit so it ended up in the cab somewhat visible. The repair person said they would remove the sound unit and return it with the replacement Forney. He asked how I was doing with the replacement gear parts for my Shay I had received a while ago. I replied I was still having a problem and would appreciate replacement wheel sets if they were available.
The new Forney arrived yesterday with the removed sound unit and the wheel sets for the Shay included in the box along with my original check, voided.
If I hadn't also purchased a number of other On30 engines I would feel guilty about receiving such excellent service. Though it took a bit of time, I am completely satisfied and commend Bachmann for standing behind their products.

On30 / Narrow gauge E-Z track?
July 26, 2013, 03:45:03 PM
Considering the expanding interest in On30 model railroading, and the fact I suspect there are many, like myself, who enjoy the hobby but are not currently in a situation to be able to construct the quality layout we would like but who still enjoy "running" our trains, it would seem to me there would be a market for offering the HO E-Z Track with narrow gauge track spacing.  I realize the high cost of developing a new product line like this, but I suspect interest would warrant it. Has Bachmann done any surveying on this subject?

By the way, if you like narrow gauge and have not yet come across the publication: the "Narrow Gauge and short Line Gazette" affectionately known as just "The Gazette," you need to find a copy and see what you're missing. The modeling is exceptional and the growing number of modelers working in On30 continues, if what The Gazette presents is any indication. On the cover of the May/June issue, front and center, was the Forney in a photo from the article on the On30 Smuggler's Cove layout.

When one considers the cost of developing new models and the fact Bachmann produces them in four different scales and for both steam and diesel periods, I suspect trying to keep everybody happy is a significant challenge. There is part of me that is thankful for all they have done so far. I LOVE my On30's with sound.

On30 / Should I send it in?
June 28, 2013, 08:26:58 PM
Regarding the gear issues on the Shay etc. I have an older Shay with DCC and sound. It has not yet given me gear problems, should I send it in anyway for gear replacement while the offer stands?

General Discussion / Did I do something wrong?
June 13, 2013, 09:03:19 PM
Over two months ago I sent my On30 Forney to the Bachmann repair department to replace some damaged parts. It was shipped in the original box.
I included my name, address, phone number and e-mail address. I have yet to receive an acknowledgment the engine was received or any contact from Bachmann. I did not think it necessary to send it "return receipt requested." But it was clearly addressed. What's going on?

On30 / Re: Analog to DCC with Sound

Steve, thanks for the advice. I will take it and let the Mogul stand. I really appreciate it. My philosophy is: I don't know what I don't know. Now I do, at least regarding sound and the Mogul.  Jon
