The West Side lumber co certainly used air as did the Swayne Lumber co from whom the bought the first of thier long skels, the AMS 1:20.3 skels models have air modelled on them

aluminum tracks are fine to power, they have much lower electrical resistance than either SS or brass, however for outdoors they must be kept very clean or arcing and pitting becomes an issue, I can't comment on brands as I do not know what alloying may be used

Shays "walking off the track" was related to the torque that was applied not so much the speed, but the combination of a heavy Load and speed on an adverse grade was almost a certain derailment, on the West Side the climb up to Flume prior  to the 4.8% downgrade was always taken with care and in the Catenary Video, Bert Bergstrom mention one such derailment
