I've read elsewhere that placing an aluminium foil "umbrella" or a more aesthetically pleasing stainless steel (mixing) bowl above the receiver can deflect any interference from lighting etc.

I agree. I have a couple of Broadway Limited locos, one being steam with traction tyres and have had no problems with traction or performance. I'd put it up against any manufacturer when it comes to quality and price.

That's an interesting concept and one I may consider myself.
Here is the info I received from Bachmann when I queried them about using those two Dynamis connectors at the same time to power different sections of a layout rather than use a power distribution block.
They said it was fine provided I ensured I got the polarities correct to prevent shorting.
As far as programming locos, I just remove all but the one I'm programming from the track.

All my track has power just with this one terminal connection!

The addressing instructions come with the Crossovers or any accessory for that matter.
I found them simple to follow having had no prior experience with DCC.

Instructions should have come with them including specific instructions for the Dynamis system. Mine did.

The controller doesn't alter track power so no it can't control DC locos. It sends a command to the DCC loco. DC locos can't receive that command and act on it.

The documentation I received with my Bachmann DCC Alco RS3 diesel says to check the User's Guide at www.soundtraxx.com and/or www.bachmanntrains.com for automatic sound functions.
It does say however that CV 197 selects which automatic sound functions are enabled.
It also says these are preset to activate to have automatic horns on forward, stop and reverse. The bell is suppose to sound automatically as well but none of these are on by default with my diesel.

While you're at it how about larger straight turnouts (DCC) as well.

This could be related to your loco programming.
On rare occasions I have had to reprogram all my turnouts after programming something else. I also intermittently have one particular turnout lose its' programming for no apparent reason

I have a couple of BLI locos I've programmed with Dynamis with no problems.
I've also programmed on the main track. I just make sure no other locos are on it when programming ;-)

BTW. AFAIK changing the name of the loco is superficial and doesn't affect anything in relation to its' operation.

Yes, never let it run dry.
The instructions I have with my smoke generator is top up when the smoke thins out or turn the generator off.
On my engines this can be done remotely or by a physical switch on the loco.

A permanent layout will never be an option for me. I'll be travelling a lot and will never be in one spot for too long and even if I do I'll be renting.
I will however be adding track feeders and possibly a booster as well if I get more locos. I intend expanding the layout with more main track as well (triple track), space allowing.

FWIW, I'm currently using a basic Dynamis DCC system with 112' of track covering an area of about 16' x 6' in a dual track format with sidings and 6 turnouts. I run 3 locos all with sound and because the layout is temporary and on the floor, I have just one feeder at this stage.
It runs fine

AFAIK that's it. I'm sure if there were others 'the bach-man' would have listed them.

My experience with the track cleaning car.
It has non-abrasive pads and you can buy replacements (2 pieces Item No 16949).
I've only used mine for about an hour of cleaning in total and no signs of wear.
The pad support in itself is weighted and floats so car weight is irrelevant but if you wanted to you can easily add weight to the car (and similar cars sold by Bachmann) by removing the tanker lid and add fishing sinkers. This works very well to help stop derailments and gives more realistic movement.
The way the pad is designed means it will clean in either direction. Great for sidings where you can run up and down a couple of times to clean dead end track.
The only minus in the design IMHO is the pads wear two grooves which means most of the (square) pad area is wasted when it comes time to replace them. A pad that could be rotated would be more cost effective.
BTW I bought my track cleaner at considerably less than RRP. Shop around as always.

I have one of these and it does work very well. I use it to augment my hand cleaning practices.
Particularly useful in hard to get areas like tunnels.
