A little more information on the Station building. The adobe style was used in the Southwest. I believe the building prototype is in Portales New Mexico.  There is a very similar station still standing in Las Cruces New Mexico. The roof outline on the ticket booth is slightly different though. I believe the brick structures were used in the mid west.

General Discussion / Re: installing sound in a 70 ton

Interesting article in the January Model Railroader where an individual installs a sound decoder with the correct sounds in a 44 Tonner.

I think on this site there has been discussion on installing sound in a 44 Tonner. So might be able to search for that here too.

There are some regional RRs with passenger service but for the msot part I beleive it would be Amtrak in that time frame of 80s and 90s.

This site might provide more info about the Amtrak paint scheme.

FYI: I know New Mexico currently has the Rail Runner which is not Amtrak.

My favorite is the C&S between Golden and Silver Plume.

As a bonus Devils Gate bridge, very awesome to ride up and over the tracks you were just on.

HO / Re: Tinkering with the new 0-6-0 (DCC)

Glad to hear about recovering the Mantua 0 4 0 from the Katrina flood.

I suspect since they were so heavy it helped to make better connection to rails.

They are also pretty simple to access the components and my 0 6 0 runs pretty good after installing a yardbird motor.

I have three more looking at converting to DCC.

0 6 0 little 6 tank engine

4 6 0 Rogers

and a 4 4 0 General.

FYI, I just finished adding a sound decoder to a Mantua 0 6 0 and I drilled the sound holes down through the tender chassis.

The speaker is large so it has a lot of volume and sounds good you can hear it in the video.

This is a special loco as it was the first one I built over 30 years ago, good to see it running again.

Jonathon as always your work is inspiring keep it up!!!    :)

Not sure if you are interested in doing some work on an older engine but searched on E Bay today for the Mantua 4 4 0 General and there are still several out there. I actually was very lucky and found a used one for $50 recently at my LHS and it was in excellent condition. It needs some tweaking to get it to run a little better and someday I will get to that.

These engines I believe were in use druing the Civil War era which might be a little before the timeframe you are modeling.

As always Jon's projects are inspiration.

Fantastic looking caboose to bring up the rear of any train!

Sunnyfield

This site is very helpful even though it is for the 0 4 2 Porter. I did an install on my 0 4 2 but it is not very easy. I tried sound but could not figure out how to stuff it in all in and wound up just converting it to DCC only.

Study up on it if you want to pursue it but understand it is a little bit of work.

These are my favorites and tend spend more time on the layout:

Bachmann 70T Southern Pacific
Bachmann 44T DR&G
Bachmann 0 6 0 Tanker Almagordo and Sacrmento RR
Bachmann FTA Santa Fe
Bachmann 0 6 0 Tender engine (needs logo not sure what yet)
Atlas S4 NMWTRR
Athearn S12 Santa Fe
Athearn SW1500 NMWTRR
Athearn Converted SW1500 chasis with two lil'hustler shells modfied into a center cab NMWTRR
Athearn GP7 Union Pacific
MDC Climax

What is in the machine shop being modernized with DCC and a new motor:

Mantua Big 6 Santa Fe
Waiting to go into the shop is a Tyco 4 6 0 Rogers and a Mantua 0 6 0 tanker.

Looking to get a sound version of the newer Bachmann steamers.

Always seems like there is one more engine that I would like to get !

General Discussion / Re: how do i fix this?

The MDC Climax has the same chasis as the Box Cab.

One issue I found with my boxcab is the drive dog was slipping on the shaft. This can cause very erratic operation.

I drilled a very small hole through the end of the plastic drive dog and into the shaft. Actually drilled them at different times but got them close enough to use a small piece of a paper clip and super glue to tie them together. This helped but it is not the best runner.

The link shows a photo on how it looked after I finsihed attaching the drive dog to the shaft.

I understand there are other things that can be done to them to improve their running capabilities. I think others posted info regarding a book that might help.

The tyco 4 4 0 also was not the best runner but looked great. Best of luck

Yes On30 equipment runs on HO track.

It is larger so overhangs track a little more and is taller too.

I run an 0 4 2 and a 2 6 0 on my HO layout. I switch the HO bldgs with some O scale and it looks pretty good.

I had to really check the clearance of the over hang for the passenger cars as I use 18 inch radius.

Jonathon

You might try something like this to cover that cut out area. Not sure if it is large enough but a small air conditioner might make sense.

Also just can't resist you must be saying what the A team used to say: "I love it when a plan comes together!"

BillD,

Question not sure you ever found pictures of the cab of the C&S Mogul?

I dug around through some of my pics of the C&S 2 8 0 that is in Idaho Springs Colorado but did not have any showing much detail of the cab.

I have searched little on line but have not found anything.

Hope you found something to help you out.
