Did you use the MRC 1639 or the 1869?

I'm using the Loksound optional wire harness, part # 51953.  It looks to me that loksound is following the standard color convention for the 8 pins. If you follow this link http://store.sbs4dcc.com/esu51953loksoundselectharness.aspx and click on the "larger image" link, it's very easy to see the pin/wire connections. For $5.50, it would probably make sense to get one of these and hack off the 9 pin end of the cable.

Once Santa lets me open it, I'll be installing a Loksound Select in my 2-4-2T.  I have the decoder and optional cable that should make it plug and play. I don't plan to run this loco with a large consist, so I'm hoping the peak/average amperage will suffice as Loksound is known for it's headroom and robust build. There's a 2-6-2T sound config which I will use so I think it could be a good match.

Stay tuned.

Beautiful!

Thanks for resurrecting this cutey.

I've had one on order since November and look forward to it's arrival soon. Time to order the sound decoder so we are ready to rock and roll.

Kevin, great info as usual.

I will make the change to use the chuff cam and let everyone on the board know how it goes.

Thanks.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry if my terminology was confusing.

My understanding is that by simply removing the dummy plug and installing the Quantum Magnum, that the only option I have is "auto chuff" since there is no standard defined on the 12(?) pin board connector (Aristo/Bachmann psuedo standard) for the sound trigger. Right?

There's a seperate two pin connector on the Magnum which a sound trigger can be connected to and somewhere on the Mallet board is a connection to which one could join it. Right?

So then the next questions are; does the Mallet use the later optical trigger mechanism and do I need to dig up the info that was developed for the K-27 to build a small circuit between the Mallet and the Magnum to make it work?

Final question, is it worth this aggravation or should I just continue to experiment with the auto-chuff settings to get it close to perfect?

Again, thanks for the help so far. peter

Large / Sound Cam in Mallet 2-6-6-2T?
April 26, 2011, 01:25:46 PM
I have the QSI Magnum installed in my Mallet, but wondered if anyone had changed the simple install from a pnp with synchronized chuff, to using the chuff cam that I understand this engine has. I'm reasonable satisfied with the chuff effect as is, but would be interested to know if the results are better using the mechanical method and presumably, a compound setting to get the in/out of sync effect.

As the end of March 2011 nears, is there any update on the arrival of the much anticipated new Lyn?

Any chance you'll have a sample of the new Lyn 2-4-2T with you?

How long is your 5 foot radius section. I have two places with two sections of track but there's an 8 foot radius section before and after them. I have no problem with that.

You did adjust the coal pile on the front of the tender right? To run on less than 8 ft you need to remove it and rotate it 180 before putting it back. Otherwise the deck plate will foul it on tight curves

Garden Railways review had the following statement:

" In tests, the engine starting moving at .2V, .2 amps, with sustained running at .4V, 2 amps. Full slip occurred at 15V, .9 amps. "

so a 1 amp decoder like the Tsunami or Loksound Select should be fine in this loco.

Randy I believe is referring to the reissue of this model which was projected to be available in December 2010 but has not yet arrived.

So, depending on the stall current, the Loksound Select with the 51953 optional wiring harness might work well and is relatively inexpensive. The amplifier can drive the included 8 ohm speaker with 2 watts of power. Sound set 73147 includes a 2-6-2 Tank engine option which will probably be acceptabe. About $90 all in so it would be nice if it works out.

We shall see!

Thanks for the info. I'll be giving some thought to what DCC Sound Decoder might be a good fit (pyhsically and musically).
