I just learned of his passing this past Monday, after having sent him an email wishing him a "Happy New Year" (we last spoke this past September); I received an email from his son, letting me know of his passing.  This struck me as well as I also consider myself a friend of Sid's and will greatly miss speaking to him about all manner of things and hearing that laugh of his.

After I first logged in here back in 2013 or so he reached out to me for my number and was not shy about calling me from time to time and never stopped calling me even after I stopped coming here for all intensive purposes about 5 years ago.  I will miss him greatly because while he was a greatly skilled modeler without question, always giving and willing to share advice, he was a great person.

As stated, he loved his modeling, whether trains or cars and told me he won several modeling competitions.  Here is an example of some of his great car modeling work in case you were not aware of his penchant for those as well:

To the OP. A picture is worth a thousand words I learned many years ago. Solves issues faster.

Please sign your name. It is appropriate.

Rich

Don't worry about your name. If you are not comfortable using your name then don't.

Rich.....please quit making up rules of conduct. If you wanna use your name, go ahead. Nothing here says it is "appropriate" .

WoundedBear

Afterall, "rich" changes his User name, back and forth, recylcing them, every couple years on the train forums he's on..... ???

Getting the factory joiners off is quite simple.

Nope, not always.  For anyone interested in facts, it would behoove them to check out the multitude of posts about this very subject on this very Board (but then again most never bother b4 asking a question, cause they might actually see it has been addressed 3 or 4 times, already.....)

If one was to go that route, getting a thin sheet of styrene would be the way to go.  Drill a hole to accommodate the bolster, then use a hole punch to punch a disc out around that center hole, like Jim Banner would do from time to time.

Would replacing the coupler w/an Underset shank one, work for you?  (assuming the one in there is not already one of those).

Indeed.  (see PM)

MRC makes the best DC power packs out there.  Virtually bullet proof and rarely have plastic parts that break or electric components that go bad.  New or Used, hard to go wrong.

The old layout was not soldered, as that would defeat the purpose of using ez track.

Gee whiz Joe, you don't say.... ::)

And if you solder the joiners, what was the point in buying the EZ Track in the first place?

...not sure why you bothered to ballast the EZ Track in the first place, but I thank you for answering my questions. :)

I do not recall having Continuity problems with ballasted EZ track.

Is this bc you soldered the joiners beforehand, or no, you did not?

I am with Sid.

Even employing Narrowminded's method, I have found inconsistent results, which includes wrecking a rail as you have found.  You can Search here Saul for this very same Topic, as it has come up here many times in the past.

I therefore 2nd Flare's suggestion, adding that you can also use a Cutting Disc from a Dremel or Dremel like tool to cut the gap and instead of having to use a Styrene I Beam, just use a small piece cut from a sheet of Styrene, the thickness you need to fill the gap.  After gluing you can trim the Styrene down to rail profile using an Xacto knife and the proper blade (chisel).

Good luck.  Hope this helps.  :)

PS-If you use the powered cutting tool, make sure you wear eye protection.

Terrific work, as per usual!

Since you're striving for realism, perhaps allow for a little more slack in the lines if possible given the set up; they seem a little taught compared to ones out in the real world.

*Fun Fact: Did you know the lines have a tremendous built in ability to be stretched, basically to the ground, w/o breaking? ;)

I did not know there were more than one kind.  It is nickel/silver if that's what you mean.

Happy to see your answer :)  There is also Steel EZ Track but that is crud, so you got the good stuff ;).

I take it bc it is EZ Track, you don't have the joiners soldered?  If that is the case I would consider testing the continuity/resistance (OHMs) from one section to the other for those spots where you are having trouble by removing the sections one section of track past either side of where your troubles are and then testing the continuity by putting the probes at opposite ends on the same rail and see what the resistance is like.  I suspect what you are going to find is loose rail joiners that may be loose from age and being put together and taken apart a few times.

Just a suggestion, hope that helps.

Could be wrong, of course, but believe those numbers are manufacturing lot numbers, like where and when kinda stuff.  I have several pieces of 18"R N/S EZ Track but they have a different series of numbers, similar to the ones you are referring to, but the numbers are not identical.
