Blind drivers were part of the technology of the time. By having flanges only on the front and rear wheel sets the middle wheels were fixed in the frames. The drawback is that all guiding forces were put on the leading flange which, consequently, wore fast and ate the rails. Better metallurgy after 1900 allowed for side play in some axles along with side play of the coupling rods on the driving pins of these axles. One type of 2-8-0 loco I know on my road has the first and third axle fixed, thus resulting in a shorter fixed wheel base than if the first and fourth axle were fixed. The guiding force in curves is thus divided among several outward flanges.

In short: blind drivers belong to the 19th century and were superseded by side play in some axles and better steel for crank pins and side rods.

thank you for the info. So far the "standard" scale for traction equipment has been 1:24, I wonder if the 1:29 is as accurate a description as the "1:20.3" on the small freight cars. Those trolleys look good, and if they are compatible in scale to the previous single-truck trolleys and LGB's New Orleans trolley I will have one.

thank you for your reply. No it's not the air pump. My 2-4-2 has several additions that the Lyn didn't have, like a generator on the right hand side smokebox and the air pump on the fireman's side of the smokebox. The water pump sits atop the water tank on the fireman's side.

I am now the proud owner of a 2-4-2. I really like the new drive block and the moving valve rods. They move in sync with the piston rod instead of 90 degrees ahead, but that doesn't matter, the movement looks neat.
It has a steam pump on the left water tank that would be very valuable as a spare part...

What is it's function? Is it used to pump water out of the tank, like for firefighting, or does it suck water INTO the tank from a nearby stream?

I also take it the wire going down beside the tank is the steam exhaust, so where does the water output of the pump hook in?

Members knowledgeable in logging or mining technology please help!

The prototype of this car is a ET&WNC hopper, and it had air brakes. Brake cylinders were at one end under the slope sheet. The Bachmann model has this area boarded up, but prototypically there should not be any end boards. Air lines under the car and air hoses each end may be added by the modeller.

the info that they are metric is enough. From measurements of the mounting hole I have the diameter, but I was unsure of the type of thread. It's M2.5.

After not so much running time my 1:20.3 2-6-6-2 had the front truck run in idle. The cause was the motor mount screws were loose in the first place and now they have fallen off.

Being in Europe I don't fancy sending the whole loco in for replacement. In fact, if any of you can give me the specifications of the screws No. 10183 that attach the motor to the gear box I would rather buy them from a hobby shop.
