I would like to detail my Durango & Silverton bobber caboose interior. 

Does anyone know where I could find out what the interior layout would have been around the turn of the century for one of these cabeese. :-)

I always assumed that the flanges on a loco's wheels were there to keep the train on the track. 

I did a little research and found out that the flange is rarely in contact with the rail because the wheels themselves are slightly tapered.  This helps to center the wheels on the track.  Many loco's don't have flanges on the main drive wheels (blind driver) to prevent binding on curves. 

So it looks like my Durango & Silverton is a fairly accurate replica of the real thing.

This is a curiosity question.

I bought a 4-6-0 Durango & Silverton set last year, and I am just recently getting around to setting it up.

I noticed that the middle set of wheels do not have flanges. 

Is this done to accommodate  tighter radius curves?

I am just starting out in large scale. 

I'm planning a simple oval (5' x 14') on a raised flower bed and thought I would experiment with using a rechargeable battery connected through a rheostat to to supply track voltage, and eventually move to R/C with on-board battery power.

Building the flower bed has proved to be very challenging. (i'm not the gardening type  )

I have a 4-6-0 large scale loco and want to convert it ot battery operation.  Do I have to isolate the motor from the frame on this model?

I do plan to start a garden layout this spring.  Very simple, just a loop and go from there.

Sound, my first recommindation would be Phoenix (www.phoenixsound.com) or Sierra (www.soundtraxx.com) Sierra at $189 is cheaper, but for about $100 more, you can upgrade to Phoenix. Both are great quality systems.

I also recommend you join MLS (www.mylargescale.com). A great website for resources and the forums are great too.
