SoCalBobS:

To insure that my comments to you are accurate I just went out to my Narrow Gauge Layout and re-checked my track grade measurements which vary slightly between 4 and 5%. My track radius varies between 9 and 11 inches. I first placed Skarloey on the track and observed that he could reliably pull about 5 cars. I then placed Rheneas on the track and observed that he could reliably pull about 4 cars probably due to the fact that Skarloey weighs a little more than Rheneas which results in a little more tractive effort.

I hope this helps you. Please post some layout photos when you are able. We all like to see layout progress photos here.

Grandpuff

Thanks.  In the interim, I've acquired a Rheneas and a Gmeinder loco, installed some Peco Setrack and assembled a 5% grade oval using Woodland Scenics inclines.  My results were consistent with yours.  No problems, so my layout plan is viable!

Grandpuff, hello.  I read you were working on a 2x4 layout using Skarloey and Rheneas.  As luck would have it, I've just started my 2x4.  Searching for locos led me here.  If you don't mind, I have a couple of questions about the engines.  I'm going to be using Peco OO9 9" curves on a 5% grade, and you noted you'd tested the S and R on worse.

So, 1) can you estimate how many cars they can manage, and 2) which climbs better?

I'd post my plan, but it's too large a file.  Suffice to say, it's almost Peruvian in grades and curves.  Maybe I can shrink the file.

I'm replacing the Thomas faces (sacrilege, I know), with smokebox door from Shapeways.

Thanks in advance!

On30 / A Heisler part..
March 28, 2018, 07:02:00 PM
My Stearns Heisler "grounded" itself off my layout table onto the floor.  Among other damage, a truly "pivotal" part broke, actually both of them.  It's the plastic pin that the trucks snap onto.  There is a part number on the exploded view here, but it isn't listed as something for sale.

So here's my question.  How can I get a replacement?  This will be my first experience of this sort with Bachmann.

I sent an email to their customer support a week ago but haven't received a response.  Would I have better luck by calling?  If neither email or phone call will help, is there any other way to get this part?

Thanks in advance for any replies.  I'd hate this otherwise great locomotive to sit in the scrap yard.

(Its part # 00W04X2)

Had the same issue, your advice was the solution.  Thanks from me also.

I'd buy one of each, along with the upcoming 0-6-0!  Also, how about a Porter 0-4-0 with a tender?  There are prototypes out there.

On30 / 18’ archbar trucks
December 21, 2017, 12:07:52 PM
What are the archbar trucks on the 18' On30 freight cars?  Are they part #29904?  I'd love to get a few sets for scratchbuilt cars, to make them similar to the stock ones.

Thanks Flare, I gave CV116 a try with different values, didn't hear a change.  I'll keep checking on forums.

On30 / Whitcomb sound
December 06, 2017, 05:31:23 PM
Got my Whitcomb last week.  Got a question about the sound: all seems to be in working order, except maybe one thing.  Is there an acceleration factor for the engine noise? Mine produces an idle noise, and an in motion noise, but the in motion noise stays at the same rpm regardless of the speed.

Otherwise it's just great, just curious why the engine noise doesn't reflect speed, like steam chuffs for the steam locos.

On30 / 4-4-0 current pickup
December 04, 2017, 12:19:38 AM
Considering a 4-4-0, either classic or modern, with DCC.  Which wheels pick up current from the track, just the four drivers, or any more? Thanks!

I also notice that in the stock configuration, there is no dynamo sound, as there is on button #5 for other locos.  Would this be because the lights weren't electrical?  If so, can this be changed, maybe at CV 39, set at 00 by default?

Flare, thanks so much. You were absolutely correct, it's done.

On30 / Heisler LIghts

Inboxed an On30 DCC/Sound Heisler today.  Setup worked fine.  However, the lights are not directional. Is there a CV or som way to activate the directional lighting capability?
