HO / Re: EMD F40PH Diesel motor replacement problem

If this is an old split frame model, good luck. The Bachmann motors are not the best and often break when you pull the split frame apart. It is a well known problem. I am sure Bachmann didn't plan it this way, but once they have committed to a design or a mfg. it is a hard and expensive thing to change.

If you are lucky enough to have a newer frame, you can mount just about any manufacturers can motor in place. They usually have their own flywheels attached. If you are trying to use any flywheel that is not machined metal, you will ALWAYS have a big risk of having vibration issues.

Look up how to make an HO gear puller or buy one from NWSL. They are worth the money. So is a driver quarterer. Both tools are an absolute must if you plan on replacing gears on steam engines.

HO / Re: replace valve gear 4-8-4 Overland

Dear Bach Man...

Trainman 203 is probably correct, but please don't listen to him. Part of my fun with this hobby is kitbashing, modifying and repairing stuff. Your Acela stuff is stupid expensive on popular auction sites. Unfortunately, there are parts that break and without parts being available, my Acela would be complete junk.

Now, maybe, the Bach Man can tell me how to get that valve gear assembly off of the locomotive?

Oh yeah, since it is painted in UP but styled after an NYC Niagra, Why can I not get the appropriate elephant ears as a separate part? Your job is probably secure, but searching for Bachmann threads might help solidify and fill in any holes. Many people want a set of elephant ears to make this locomotive into a proper model.

HO / replace valve gear 4-8-4 Overland
November 23, 2019, 08:06:49 AM
I have finally worn out my Overland 4-8-4. It wants to bind because the slide rods on the valve gear have broken. There is a replacement part that appears to be connected to the main drive wheel with a hex head screw.

The questions:

1) Is this a screw or some kind of pin on the main drive wheel?

2) If this is a screw, what is the size of hex head? It seems like 2mm, but I am not exactly sure. It is soft metal and I only have so many chances before the hex head gets rounded and impossible to get off.

Dear Bachmann,

Thanks for producing better quality rolling stock and locomotives. For many years, I wondered why your company did not compete with Walthers or Athearn.

I have a friend, new to model railroading, and no matter how many times I told him not to use 18" radius, he insisted. He is now limited on what he can run.

Perhaps, Bachmann would consider some 60' Harrimans or some nicer versions of the Overton cars? This way, they are prototypical and people with tight radius turns can still run them.
