I have one that you're welcome to.  The replacement trucks are the right solution tho...

Recently replaced (3/2020) rear power truck on 2-truck g-scale Shay no longer picks up power from the wheels.  I have removed the axles and cleaned the pickups and back of the wheels.  When power is applied to the bare pickups nothing happens, as is the case when power is applied to the re-installed wheels.

When the truck is fitted to the locomotive and power is applied to the front truck wheels, the rear truck operates normally.

Any ideas?

Thx.

Large / Re: tips for Climax 81180

Hi,

George Schreyer's information on the Climax is pretty good.  http://girr.org/girr/tips/tips5/climax_tips.html.  Greg Elmassian also has some tips that might be helpful:  https://elmassian.com/index.php/large-scale-train-main-page/motive-power-mods-aamp-tips/bachmann-motive-power/bachmann-climax

Here is a power pickup modification that's on my to-do list:  https://onedrive.live.com/?authkey=%21AFtY%2DkY7xaq4SN8&cid=B34D25E327BE7D30&id=B34D25E327BE7D30%2134148&parId=B34D25E327BE7D30%2134147&o=OneUp

I think it is important to replace the rear driveshaft (Bachmann part G118X-00U02) if the one on your locomotive is a single piece shaft.  The replacement is a two piece shaft and each piece can spin independently so if one of the drive gear fails that won't break the other one.

I don't think the old Shay pickups are the same as the Climax.  You may want to reference the work of George Schreyer at http://girr.org/girr/tips/tips5/climax_tips.html for a picture of the pickup.  There is a somewhat elegant workaround for replacing the pickups here:  https://1drv.ms/b/s!AjB9vifjJU2zgopkW1j6RjvFqrhI3w?e=4nfRaa; this solution eliminates the plunger/spring/ball bearing completely and when partnered with George Schreyer's "Truck to Frame Connection Modification" removes the need for those springs and ball bearings completely.

Before the pandemic closure, Bachmann Parts Department indicated that the pickup assembly "might" become available during 2020.  Don't know if that's still the case.

Good luck!

Large / Spring for Climax track pickup plunger
February 25, 2020, 02:51:18 PM
Hi all,

My trusty old Climax needs new springs for the wheel pickup plungers (https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_641&products_id=8301 -- sold out).  Bachmann parts does not have this spring and suggested I post here to see if anyone has a source.

Thanks.

I don't know if it works with EZ track, but azatrax.com offers a Reversing Track solution that will do what you want without DCC.

Hello all,

Does anyone have advice on replacement of the cylinder assembly (https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=69_629&products_id=555&zenid=ff07k64hss4jgsassdj5ouo5h2) on a 36-ton shay?
I removed the two screws but it looks like the cab will have to come off as well--is that the case?

Thanks in advance
