HO / Re: Weight of rolling stock
February 26, 2012, 08:52:43 AM
I'm using fishing sinkers.  They tell you how much they weigh right on it. and I am sticking about 2 oz on each truck if the unit is long enough to support it.  My reasoning is because I am tired of all the derailements at the switches and curves.  This makes them hold the track well.  I just pop the shell off and use Elmer's glue to secure the weights.  I am not using model cement with that because the Elmer's glue can get cleaned up easily and the model cement can't.   a 4 oz unit plus whatever it weighs without the added weights.  I am not as concerend about the weights because my units are not going to a competition like a pine car race where the weight is of importance.  If you loco can't pull it maybe it needs more weight?  Mine do very well, with an average of 15 boxcars.

HO / Looking for old pancake motors
February 26, 2012, 08:35:40 AM
I have two older Bachmann locomotives.   They quit working.  They are show pieces for me and I would like to make them run again.  Bachmann no longer makes these parts. (so much for lifetime warranty, because as these things age, and newer technology evolves they stand less and less behind their older creations)  I called Bachmann and asked about these and they said they would replace the whole unit and the tone in the woman's voice sounded as if they were ashamed of the older units.  She wanted to give me something newer.  Newer would be nice if they were going to make these units again with DCC and ez mates, but they are not.  Bachmann actually sold more of these units in HO than were produced by the real locomotive itself.  I want to make my units run again. The pancake motor as it is commonly called is the powered trucks with the engine located over the truck. The electrical pick ups are the back set of trucks.
I would like to get a replacement set of these motors that work just fine.  I use these these units at shows and I like to brag on them, though they are not the greatest, They DO generate a lot of conversations.  Can anyone help me?  My next show is in April and the grand daddy of shows is June 2nd.  I hope to get them running again super soon.

HO / Repair of old locomotive
February 25, 2012, 05:09:13 PM
Ok, I have a really old locomotive. Bachmann said they would  replace it with something else but I don't want anything else.  The locomotive's engine quit working.   So much for a lifetime warranty.  This locomotive just won't run any more.  I am considering buying parts off of ebay to gut an older locomotive to use as a replacement part and need to know if it would fit it.  I am going to buy an old beat up F9 locomotive and use the pancake motor out of there to replace the burned out motor the locomotive's motor power looks very similar as with older stuff so it might work.  Are there any thoughts?  It is a prized locomotive to me and I would like to make it work again.

The motor doesn't do much to impress me at this stage. I am thankful they still run though.   I think Bachmann only produced these two models of this locomotive and I had to search far and wide just to get my hands on them.  Mostly they have the sentimental value to them but they can run.

The CN "Noodle" is a classic design and began a modernisation trend in many corporate logos.  The Nike "Flash" is an example of the infuence of the CN noodle design.

yeah like Central Vermont.  Looks like they ripped that off.

my railroad is the Orange and ALEXANDRIA   It was a real railroad, but though it didn't survive much past the CIVIL WAR,  I model it as if it had made it to the 1960's

Sorry I wasn't specific enough they are diesels they were made in the 1980's.  I do not have the know how to do soldering or anything, my expereinces are with the old fashioned ways.   ALL  I want to do is make the older stuff work with today's stuff and run with the club stuff.   Bachmann has to do some repairs on some stuff and I would certainly would like to upgrade parts if at all. I just want to make it work.

Hi Everybody,

I have these locomotives here that were made by Bachmann years ago like in the 1980's.  Recently I used them at a train show and they were quite popular topics of conversation.  I want to know if these can be converted to use digitraxx?  I also want to know if there might be a better engine that I could put in these things to make them run better?

The cabooses are non-Bachmann, but they  matched the locomotives

I have some older Bachmann locomotives. Can these be kitbashed to accomodate DDC/ or digitraxx?  Our club uses digitraxx decoders.
