A good half Century ago when I was modeling in Horribly Oversized Scale, I had a few European Prototype steamer that "smoked". If I recall correctly, they were by Fleischmann and used Seuthe smoke units. Very messy to fill the tiny "smoke generator" in the stack with the appropriate fluid (even in Horribly Oversized); you had a few wispy curls of "smoke" for about 2 minutes which looked tacky as hell, and then you had to refill the blasted thing again. Definitely NOT worth the aggravation...

The 4-4-0 has the motor in the tender; with a drive shaft connecting the tender to the back of the cab. Apparently the drive shaft has gone missing on your loco; the whirring noise you hear is the motor happily spinning away, unfortunately it is not connected to the drive wheels.

This loco has been around forever and there have been quite a few changes to the mechanism over the years; So I really can't tell you offhand how to go about finding that part (unless it is still in the box the loco was stored in); you might try calling B'mann's Customer Service Dept on Monday.

eBay is NOT Bachmann. When you buy  from eBay, you take you chances and more often than not, you get screwed. You need to file a claim with eBay and PayPal.
You need to buy from Bachmann directly or from a reputable Hobby Dealer.
Are you located in the US?

Bachmann does not change model number as they update the product. So the model number for the new one would be the same as the number for the old one you have. The new (silent motor) version has been out for quite a few years now; so ANY of those 5 different numbers would be for a locomotive with the new motor

I second that. About 10-15 years ago I converted  ~350 cars and 125 locos to MT's;  (mostly body mount 1015's). Short but steep learning curve. After a while I could assemble a 1015 in about 2 minutes using the assembly jig. (I found a Hobby Shop -Gandy Dancer- in Chamblee, GA that was going out of business and I snapped up all their 1015 bulk packs at I think 70% off)

As a rule, Bachmann does not change product numbers on their products after updates/improvements. For example the Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern has had the same product number since its introduction in 1972; the current PCC trolley will have the same product number for a particular road name it had when it was first produced. Makes buying on feeBay kind of like Forest Gump's Box of Chocolates: You may get a current production or you may get a 30 year old one - same number..

Since the 4-8-4 is still in production, it would stand to reason that they would send one of those if your old one cannot be repaired..

I'm still hoping for the Russian Decapod; although I doubt that will happen. The HO version did not sell particularly well when it w s released a few years ago.

Looks like a variation of N-109 from the old Atlas Nine N-scale Model Railroads book from the early '70s without the double figure 8 on the upper level. There is one reversing loop. A friend of mine build one like it 35 years ago..
