General Discussion / Re: Bachmann HO B&O Doodlebug
December 06, 2019, 10:33:42 PM
Thank you for your reply. My first thought was a gear problem. I also was going to mention NWSL after I received your reply. I also seen the link from WoundedBear. I have bought many items and gear upgrades from NWSL.i wasn't aware that they had replacement parts for the Doodlebug. I haven't been on there site for a long time, about a year or so. I had to get some upgrade replacement gears for my MDC roundhouse Shay's and gear replacements for my two and three truck Climax's. i hope you get your Doodlebug up and running soon. also have a happy holiday.

I found out why the loco had a slight wobble, because it picked up a very small granule of ballast from the roadbed of the track, most likely from my finger, and it stuck to the rear driver wheel of the loco, no more wobble.the loco is running as good as it should.

Side-rod :I have two Atlas Custom Line Mark Iv turn outs #281 and a Atlas snap relay #200. code 100, The loco's have had no problems at all going over the switches, also i forgot to tell you i did a Bahmann 45 tonner single motor, the install went as well as the 45 tonner, almost the same type of install, I also put the speaker on the cab roof.both lcoco's were a tight fit, but so far so good.

To billgiannelli :Yes i received one from Mrs Santa,a American 4-4-0 #51003"Jupiter" dc ready.I had a extra TSU-750 Micro-Tsunami #826001 decoder and a soundtraxx 15mm x 4mm round speaker #810089 I installed it as a test. The loco has a 8 pin plug, so it was a plug and play install, the loco runs very well, it just has a little wobble but i think that it gives it a little character for a 1800's loco.as of now i think i'll keep this decoder in the loco.I went on Google and the only thing i can find was mostly other types of 4-4-0's,It's a new loco so it will take some time for info and reviews.

Side rod : I left it as is. when you first start up the decoder, the sound will be set very high. When you finnish the install and test it, you can make all your adjustments.get back to me if you need more info. Groovy

Side rod: I used a small dab of Latex caulk to secure the speaker to the roof of the loco next to the side of the enginer,i do not have a photo account so i can't post any photos.but if you do a google search you may find more info, plus photos of installs. i placed the decoder flat on the of the  top of the light board,if you have the instructions it will show you were to solder all the wires.I can't remember if i used any resistors for the lights, maybe someone else can verify that. I used a micro select #73800 and the #73844 sound file ( catepiller-44 ) sound installed by Tonys. Good luck with your install and take your time don't rush.

I have the same loco,it's been sitting for over two years. I also checked out the gear box,i took a close look and it looks to me that the gear box casting is not machined or casted properly, plus the ash pan cover could have the same problem. This would cause the axel and bearing to move up or down and the main drive gear will not synchronize.I tried to put a shim under the ash pan cover to hold the axle closer to the main gear and replaced the ash pan cover, but the screw is to short,so i did not want to strip the screw by forcing it down, i gave up for now, what i did is to remove the gears from the trucks and let it free - wheel and push or pull it with another loco just to see it on the track.Just like running a consist. Also i sent it to Bachmann they wanted to send me a 3 TRK, but i have two already but i asked them to send it back to me.
