If a locomotive is sold as DCC ready will it run on a DC lay out ?

It should if unmodified.
DCC ready still means different things to different manufactures.
Some provide a plug.
Some a different plug with more pins
Some have provisions to solder directly to the PCB, after removing the jumper plugs.
To others, it means only that the motor has been isolated.

What manufacturer's lokie(s) are you asking about?

Various jewel cases and inserts are available if you don't mind them made by another manufacturer.
Bachmann lokies and rolling stock fit just fine.

I am somewhat surprised that Bachmann has tolerated this post this long.
At the risk of getting both our posts deleted...
Sounds to me like you have an "open" rather than a "short",
When you put the shell on you are forcing something apart rather than together.
If it was truly "shorting" it would have negative effect on your system, probably shutting it down for a time.
Check continuity.

There are other N scale specific forums that are much more tolerant of discussion of all manufactures N Scale products, both good and bad.

Bachmann has been, and continues to be, notorious for under gauge wheel sets on all their N Scale powered offerings.
An NMRA gauge is well worth the 10-12 dollars.
Get one, it will serve you well.

I think so too...
Get your straight edge over everything.
You checked, all your wheelsets are in gauge... yes?
And your track too?

That was a first view for me.
Enjoyed it.

If you like Keaton on the rail, here's another you might like.

Next step is;
Check continuity from the railheads to the motor brushes.

Haven't looked but is Shapeways an option?

Lemme guess...

The infants and primary students you once taught are millennials?

I don't see them on the Bachmann site for parts.
Look at eBay, or a train show for a donor caboose.
Many other options for a caboose other than Bachmann.
Good luck

Quote20160519 - now this is date of manufacture - read it backwards that should read ...
25th of November 2018 - yes you are right , at least you are paying attention

WTF??  I read that as year 2016, month 05 May day 19

How the hell do you get Nov 25 2018? from that?

N / Re: EZ Track Turnout Problem
February 25, 2019, 04:39:19 AM
Early EZ track turnouts used to be power routing, I don't know if they still are.
Think in terms that your turnout is a "y".
Your power supply input must be at the bottom of the "y".

N / Re: soldering
February 14, 2019, 03:30:53 PM
I have read of some who have done this both in HO and N.
Personally, I do not see the need to do so.
I have a test track Figure 8 made from EZ track up for 9 years now.
12.5r with a 60° crossing, that's 13.3 feet of track using only one feeder.
To this day, I've never had a dead or low voltage problem place anywhere on it.
The voltage drop, over those 13 feet, is negligible.

Unless you're quite proficient at soldering, you're going to ruin a lot of track.

Good luck

N / Re: Short occurs in turnout track

@kevincasey

Get a straight edge and run it all over the turnout both top to bottom and from side to side, including over the frog both ways.
A flashlight might help.
If you see light between the straight edge and the rails, you will find the problem.
Tell us what you find.

Good luck

I do believe that @Fish meant to use the word voltage where he inadvertently uses the word current.
Use a multimeter and check for voltage.

Good luck
