That canopy stuff sounds perfect, I'll see if my LHS has any.

Thanks all.

Greetings,

My On30 Porter's headlamp lens fell out, and super-glue fogged it up when I tried to put it back.

The lens is a simple round disc that goes directly onto the slightly smaller hole from the front of the model, what adhesive will dry clear without affecting the lens' clarity?

I wonder if it is just Bachmann's power supply or does it do that with others. I have reverse loop modules that I haven't used yet. I will be using a different brand power supply when I start putting it all together.

I don't recall having that issue back when I used a 4-amp 16v AC power supply with my EZ-Command.

I could be mistaken though, I didn't really like EZ-Command and switched to NCE shortly after.

General Discussion / Re: On30 turntable wiring
October 26, 2019, 09:16:46 PM
Hello, I admit that I don't have a turntable on my layout, but I have gleaned some tips that may help you:

Depending on how your turntable rotates, you might be able to use headphone connectors as the pivot point, and use them for passing power up to the rails

Alternatively, you can use contact points under the turntable that that the rail wires will touch, but leave gaps in a position where the table will face away from any tracks.

As for reverse loop module vs frog juicer, I would prefer a reverse loop module since it will switch the polarity of both rails at the same time.  A juicer can be configured to do that, but unless you have turnouts in the area I don't see any advantage over a RLM.

On30 / Re: On30 Moonlight / Wolf Observation car?
October 26, 2019, 08:56:21 PM
Sorry for the late reply, but I don't think this set has an observation car.

To my knowledge, the Moonlight has a total of 11 unique cars behind the engine and tender, the last being a caboose.

I imagine that a regular coach could be converted by taking the enclosed end off another observation and possibly repainting it to match the Moonlight passenger cars.

The straight part of the #44561 turnout is equal to a #44511 straight section, but the diverging route is longer than a #44511 18" curve.

I placed an 18" curve on top of a #44561 turnout:  The curvature is identical, but I measured just over 1.25 inches of extra track left over above the straight section.

If you replace a #44511 straight with the #44561 turnout, you will not need extra short tracks.

However, in order to isolate the siding electrically, you will need to use a a #44597 9" straight segment with gaps built-into the rails and a pair of power connectors underneath.

(Or you can cut the rails yourself to electrically isolate your siding and use a second terminal track for power.)

There are a few Stanton Drives on Ebay that NWSL is clearing out.

Not sure if the HO ones are the right size though.

I was inclined not to use it because these brushes are real stiff. I probably bought in the late 90's. I haven't needed it in all these years so I guess I won't start now. I like that W S one. I might buy one of those.

Another option is Proses' "HO/OO Rolling Road w/Drive Wheel Cleaning"

https://proses.com/prestashop/tools-testers-cradles-rolling-roads-/35-hooo-rolling-road-wdrive-wheel-cleaning.html

It's expensive, but may be a good buy if you don't already have some of Bachmann's E-Z Riders with ball bearings, since it comes with enough for 6 axles.

I'm not a fan of abrasive methods, I much prefer the concept of Woodland Scenics' "Roto Wheel Cleaner" which lets the wheels spin against felt pads.

I had it the other way around with my old Athern cars.
They picked up so much gunk on the wheels that they spontaneously derailed .
But that was a long long time ago.

Were those metal or plastic wheels?

Another advantage to metal wheels is they'll have more weight holding them to the track around turns and the center of gravity will be lower.

On30 / How to swap front number boards on Porters?
July 09, 2019, 02:26:30 PM
My goal is to re-number on one of my Porters.

I tried removing one from a dead loco in my parts bin but it snapped off, and I suspect the base is glued in place because I can't push it out from the other side.

Is there a way to get the boards out without breaking them, or any solvents for the glue that won't affect the paint?

Jerry,

It might be a good idea to replace all of the plastic wheels with metal ones since plastic leaves a buildup on the rails, requiring more frequent track cleaning.

HO / Re: Reverse and go

Bachmann sells HO bumpers in 2-packs, model numbers 44491 and 44591 depending on which roadbed you want to match.

They also sell auto-reversing track with gray roadbed:  The starter pack is model 44547 and additional track is 44548 and 44549.

It seems like I saw somewhere that someone makes shingle sheets. I'll have to look around. That would solve the problem. If I find them in O scale size, that would be even better.

Chooch Enterprises makes some, I used a pair of large shingle sheets for my new engine shed last month.

https://www.choochenterprises.com/Oroofing.html

They're made of linoleum that likes to curl, so the included adhesive sheet may not be enough to keep it flat.

On30 / Re: Porter LED voltage?

I should have thought of it sooner, but touching a 1.5 volt battery to the contacts make it shine.
