General Discussion / Re: were are you all from?
June 23, 2007, 05:28:42 PM
Dear Gene,

My sister-in-law from KY says "y'all" is singular and "all y'all" is plural!  Around here in central PA that pertains to "yinz" being singular and "yinzes" as plural.  Ain't that a hoot!

Best Wishes,

Jack

Dear Friends, esp Bob Rule,

Thanks for the link for your son, Bob.  Will check it out when I have a quiet moment.  My friend, Ted Kominsky has been to all the EBT Fall spectacular's and has a picture of triple headed loco's.  Will ask him to share with you if you are interested.  Ted is a great guy and I will invite him along as you will get a kick out of him.  Ted is an eternal optimist, a very happy and spiritual guy.

Best Wishes,

Jack

General Discussion / Re: track prices

Dear Sheldon, et al,

Lewis Polk sent an email several days ago explaining that the price of Cu has trippled. Thus the increase in the price of brass track.

HO / Re: Converting Bachman Plus to DCC

Dear Jim, et al:

Would you advise getting a decoder tester from Tony's or other, to pre-test your decoder before installation?  I read that somewhere else, I think, but not being a DCC guy just yet, I don't remember it being mentioned on this forum.

Best Wishes,

Jack

Dear Guys,

She might start looking like Mrs. Weasley with all those red haired kids from the Harry Potter films, sort of frantic, high pitched voice, hair askance, smudged cheeks, don't you think?

Best Wishes,

Jack

P.S. Sheldon, I would like to hear what the appeals courts have to say about this.

Dear "Bob"

A while back we talked about RR'ing in the Altoona/Pgh area sometime and you sent me an email.  Would you please contact me again so we can share phone numbers and possibly do a day of watching and filming choo choo's?  Now that summer is here, I am too busy with stuff. The Fall looks better, and Friday's are really good. Hope to hear from you again.

Rick Miller, you are invited, too, as well as any other fine person on this forum.  Terrorists need not apply!!

Best Wishes,

Too, the Grumman had the "Shindler factor," i.e. superior engineering that reinforced the cockpit and allowed many pilots to survive crash landings. Good guy was E.C. Shindler.

My Father-in-law met Dave Schilling, P-47 ace with 22 1/2 kills (I think) in NY before he was killed in an auto accident after WWII. Small albeit important bit of trivia there, seeing the way the US is going these days.

HO / Re: Availability of 18-20 gauge wire
June 15, 2007, 06:53:01 AM
Dear Friends,

Here in Altoona, PA we have an automotive supply house, named "Fender Mender" that supplies primarily to the auto and auto enthusiast industries. They have lots of neat tools, auto paints, accessories, air brush accessories, etc.  There must be similar businesses in other areas. Ours is privately owned and do not have a website that I could find. However, I would suggest you try to find a place like that which would have all kinds of wires, etc.

Another thought would be an installer of stereo systems in automobiles, esp for  you lads who are in the boonies.

I really liked Jim's ideas about using recycled cables.  Mother of invention type stuff, don't you think?

Best Wishes,

Jack

Hal,

I've gotta hand it to you. Beautiful work and very realistic, especially to this old rock hound. Soft rock, that is!  (Any old geologist knows the difference!)

Someone here a while ago  recommended the "Helix Humper."  You could check their web site for the right motor.

Dear Gene and Dr,

Understood re tank engine usage.  I just got back some pictures from the Altoona Railroaders Museum including a saddle tank Porter, named  "Nancy."  Will post pix on my website if interested. Also, there are a 250 ton crane that is operational,  the "Mountain Air" passenger car from the Broadway Ltd., and Charles Schwab's personal coach, the "Loretto."

Dear Gene,

Too, you can get it with or without a tender.  Not too sure if I like the looks of the 2-6-6-2T.  Does not seem to be practical if long distances were involved, i.e. how much fuel could it hold?  Both are quite interesting designs.

Best Wishes,

Jack

Dear Friends,

I am truly impressed with the skills and knowledge displayed.

For me, after months of just talk, I am going to delve into the world of HO when a friend is giving me his HO layout. The rolling stock and engines I will purchase. He did the Erie-Lackawanna, and so will I to start. There are a bunch of Athern, Atlas, Proto and Spectrum F-8's, an Alco C-425 (I think), a Mantua Berk, and lots of custom painted rolling stock. Will have to convert it to DCC. Lots of work to do and will post pix elsewhere if anyone is interested. Or I can e-mail pix to you so's not to clog up this site.

Best Wishes,

Jack

Dear Stephen,

Micro-Mark is sold out. The Mantua version with or without tender looks to me to be a good substitute, according to Rich's comments.  Looks like I will be thinking about the Mantua!

Best Wishes,

Jack
