On30 / Flat Car Kit
March 06, 2021, 02:13:25 PM
Hi everyone. I just purchased 3 of these On30 flat car kits on Ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/North-Alabama-Models-flat-car-kit-SR-RL-prototype-28-On30-On2/393157706093?ssPageName

They have wood decks.
I was wondering if anybody could tell me what color the ET&WNC flat car decks are, and if using stain on these wooden decks would be a better choice than painting them with my airbrush.

Thanks in advance!

On30 / Re: Is On30 dead to Bachmann?
February 26, 2021, 01:50:58 AM
" How they can have 4 ET&WNC engines but not a single car for the same road name, baffles me."

Me too. I've been looking for On30 cars lettered for the ET&WNC from Bachmann ever since I bought my 2 ET&WNC 4-6-0 locomotives a couple of months ago.
All I've found are kit bash car kits on Ebay.
Way too expensive for my tastes.
So, I've settled for running my 4-6-0's with unlettered cars.
It works. For now.
It's almost like Bachmann gave up on On30 shortly after making these On30 locos.
Makes you wonder...

On30 / Re: Exchangeability of On30 sound modules
February 04, 2021, 02:55:11 PM
Hi. I agree with Ton. They should interchange, but you have to remember that the module you mentioned is not the one that is configured for your particular model.
It may , or it may not, work.
Perhaps the Bachmann will be kind enough to interject his expert opinion on this thread.
I had the same dilemma with my 3 Bachmann On30 locos.
On the 2 Bachmann 4-6-0's, I opted for after market sound systems (TCS WOW ,and MRC Loco Genie with Heavy Steam Sounds. The MRC Loco Genie is drop drop in.It comes with a remote control, and speaker already installed. There is no soldering required. You can buy it here for a fair price, which is probably less than what you'll pay for that uncertain sound module you are currently considering: https://tonystrains.com/product/mrc-021501-ho-loco-genie-universal-heavy-steam-sound-transmitter-receiver
 ).
The other, an On30 Bachmann 2-6-6-2, already had a DCC system with a 21 pin plug. I bought and installed a TCS WOW 1521 sound decoder in this locomotive.
It was basically drop in,so that was easy.
Don't forget that you'll also need a speaker for your loco.
TCS and Soundtraxx make speakers that will fit your tender perfectly , and both offer high quality sound.
Your tender fits either a 27mm , or  28mm speaker.
You'll have to measure your tenders' speaker enclosure to determine which size fits best.
A Vernier Caliper works well for this.
Good luck!

I understand.
I'm having to wait until at least Feb.2 to contact the tech at TCS. He's out on a business trip until Feb.2,and I need to see if there is a list of CV programming codes available for this thing.
I also want to know if there's a way to get the rear headlight on the tender going again.
I'm beginning to wish that I had bought a Soundtraxx system ,or another MRC Loco Genie.
While the Loco Genie isn't as full featured as the TCS, or the Soundtraxx systems, it's basically drop in on these Bachmann tenders( unless yours came with a 21 pin Soundtraxx motherboard ), and the MRC is easy to program using my Power Cab handheld.
After much internet searching, and going on the TCS website,it seems like TCS doesn't have a list of CV programming codes, which is a pain.
Amazingly, the TCS 1521 board that I put in the tender of my 2-6-6-2 (coupled to the original Bachmann 21 pin motherboard) was up and running with no problems immediately, and I was able to set it up very quickly ,and easily.
I like that.
I don't know why this TCS motherboard and 1521 sound decoder kit is such a pain.
I should have done more research...

So I've been told on youtube. How do you access that value  on the TCS Audio Assist ? I tried playing with it last night, but no luck.
Thanks Ton!

On30 / New On30 Sound Videos
January 28, 2021, 02:59:49 PM
Hi guys! Here are the videos of my 2-6-6-2 and 4-6-0 with their respective DCC sound systems installed:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EONBm8B3aA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Y6MkEz7sYU

And,yes :TCS does have sound files that they claim are of the real Tweetsie 4-6-0 !
I tried to load them to my 4-6-0 before I made this video, but I'm not certain that I was totally successful.
TCS uses what they call "Audio Assist" instead of CV's for user programming, and you do that with your DCC controller by pressing the #8 four times. A pleasant female voice then walks you through all of the various files that are available for the decoder that you chose.
I find it somewhat confusing, and I'm not sure that I like it...

On30 / Finished TCS WOW Install
January 26, 2021, 05:39:12 PM
I just finished the install of the TCS kit in the tender of my #12 ET&WNC 4-6-0.
Watch it here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRA_xex6lDg

I lost the rear headlight as there is no dedicated contact point on the board for it since this kit is meant for the Bachmann Spectrum 4-6-0, which doesn't have a rear headlight.
But the sound is excellent, so, it's wort it until I can get a hold of the support tech at TCS and talk to him to see if there is a way to get it to work with this system.
Unfortunately, he's on a business trip and will not return until February 2.
Bummer. But oh well.
I'll make do do now.

Thanks! I plan on making and posting videos of both locos in operation once I complete the TCS kit installation on the #12 ET&WNC 4-6-0.
I'm waiting for my next set of days off from my job so that I can take my time installing the kit in the tender.
No rushing on this project!
Slow and easy is the perfect pace for the job at hand !

I found the problem: The TCS sound decoder board requires an actual DCC controller to operate. It will not work on power supply only.
It's  good thing that ordered this last week:

https://tonystrains.com/product/nce-5240025-power-cab-dcc-starter-system?qty=1

This showed up last night, after I put everything away.
I tested it with the new controller just a few minutes ago, and yes!
It works, and it sounds great!

OK. Installed the 21 pin decoder board in the 2-6-6-2 . Put the loco and tender on the tracks, hit the power. Nothing. No movement, sound, or even lights.
Opened up the tender, and removed the TCS sound board. Put the original Bachmann decoder back in place. Train ran fine.
So, is it a possibly bad board, or is the TCS board having a problem with the much older Bachmann/Soundtraxx technology ?
I'm beginning to wonder if I need to buy a new TCS motherboard and install it in the tender?
What do you guys think?
I've already started work on the sound install for the 4-6-0 by removing the Bachmann/Soundtraxx DCC system, and making a shelf to install the new motherboard and decoder on.
I decided to buy the TCS 28mm High Bass round speaker that Hunt suggested. The kit comes with a small 20mm speaker, which,  aside from being way smaller that the speaker opening in the tender, I'm sure would have proven itself to be very unsatisfactory as far a s sound quality is concerned.
I definitely found that the 70mm speaker that I bought for my L*B 2-6-0 sounds far better than the one that originally came supplied with the sound module !

Hunt: Sounds great. I'll have to measure the speaker opening in the tender of the 4-6-0 with my vernier caliper to see if it will fit before I make a decision.
I know that speaker is a little too large to properly fit in the speaker opening on the 2-6-6-2 (27.2mm Vs 28mm ), which is why I bought the 27mm mega bass speaker from Soundtraxx for that model.
I'll let you know how it goes once everything arrives and I manage to put everything together and get it working right.
At the moment,I'm working on installing a LGB #65001 American Steam Sound module in the tender of my LGB #23191 Mogul.
I ordered a Massoth 57mm speaker to replace the one that comes in the module.
I was told by a very knowledgeable person that this is a great sounding speaker, and it's much better than the one from LGB.
We'll see.

P51: I did get one of those 4-6-0's from trainworld. I outfitted it with an MRC Loco Genie Heavy Steam DCC system with remote.  Unfortunately, it was the one that went "bad".
I resold it for slight profit on Ebay, and then turned around and bought the #11 ET&WNC 4-6-0 for exactly what I received for the one I sold.
Worked out great!
I put the MRC Loco Genie in the #11, and I'm happy with it for now.
I may upgrade the #11 to the TCS WOW V4. That depends on how the work on the ET&WNC #12 goes.
The #12 cost me $130.00, but that one wasn't available on trainworld.com at the time.
I'll check and see if the sounds from the real ET&WNC locomotives are available on the WOW V4.
You can be sure that I'll assign them to the #12 for sure should that turn out to be the case.

On30 / New Project
January 14, 2021, 05:30:31 PM
Hi, guys! I have invested in a TCS DCC WSK-BAC-8 WOW Kit for my Bachmann #12 ET&WNC 4-6-0. The kit is as seen in the following link:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TCS-DCC-WSK-BAC-8-WOWKits-WOWSound-Decoder-For-Bachmann-4-6-0-Baldwin-1922/254807097872?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

This kit includes a 21 pin motherboard, sound decoder, and speaker. I have studied the wiring configuration on the motherboard that's installed in my 4-6-0, and the conversion operation looks to be pretty straight forward.
And, who knows, I may like it so much that I'll upgrade the other 4-6-0 to the WOW system as well !

I have also purchased this item for the 2-6-6-2 :

https://www.ebay.com/itm/TCS-WOWSound-WOW121-Steam-1525-21-Pin-DCC-Sound-Decoder-Version-4-New/254000600018?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649

This item should be virtually plug-and-play. The only thing that I have to add is a speaker. To that end, I have purchased a Soundtraxx Mega Bass 27mm diameter round speaker to install in the tender.
It should be a perfect fit,as the speaker opening in the tender measures 27.2 mm in diameter.
I just purchased these items today, and they should arrive within the next week!
And I'll post the usual videos to my youtube channel to show the results of my work.
Until then,
Happy Railroading!
