N / Re: 0-6-0 slow speed running and a simple fix
October 28, 2016, 06:58:26 PM
I had one that I and added cylinder heads to it and used the spectrum short tender frame with a cut down Atlas 0-8-0 tender shell on it and a couple of detail parts.

N / 0-6-0 slow speed running and a simple fix
October 28, 2016, 10:34:28 AM
I was just playing around with a used 0-6-0 I got off the bay and after adjusting the cylinder assembly It runs good.     I beleave it does need some frame shims for the TT driver as you can see and hear the wheel oscillation. But I am really impressed with the slow speed performance of this engine with only the old one tender truck pick up.

The con-cor caboose I tried stripping is PC green and the the shell is a gray plastic. Maybe its the PC green paint?

I just tried removing the paint from a con-cor caboose and let it soak in 91% for 3 days did not even start to come off.

N / N scale scrap yard
September 25, 2016, 08:40:01 PM
On all my layouts I have a scrap yard.  This is my latest.
It does contain Two Bachmann or mostly Bachmann engines. Also the wrecker is one they have sold for years,I just paint them different colors. I model the late 50s so this and the grain truck come in handy.

Any guesses which engines are bachmann or mostly bachmann?

I agree with Mark, 91% alcohol works good on Bachmann shells. I stripped a Bmann spectrum 2-8-0 and many others  this way.

Side note . Warning... I tried removing the paint this way with a old Arnold F unit and the shell warped really bad. Be careful with older unknown materiels.

N / Re: Bachmann dome car color question?
September 20, 2016, 11:03:39 PM
Thank you for your help .      I think I will sand the sides smooth and fill in the extra window  and paint it in UP colors to match my  other Milw passenger cars cars.

N / Bachmann dome car color question?
September 20, 2016, 05:03:16 PM
I have stripped the paint for a Bachmann Dome car including the seats under the dome. I plan on painting up in the Milwaukee Road UP color scene. Does any body know the seat and interior color for theses cars?

Side note.  91% alcohol work very good for removing the paint.

N / Re: suggestion for next n scale steam locomotive.

We all have a favorite engines that we would like to see.  However Bachmann needs to sell enough to make a profit on there engines.

I beleave there would be a market for a SPECTRUM QUALITY USRA   0-6-0 , 0-8-0 and  4-6-2 . Many railroads had theses engines.

N / suggestion for next n scale steam locomotive.
September 15, 2016, 01:42:44 PM
Bachmann         just a idea for a future N scale steam. Seems every railroad had 0-8-0s.        Maybe a spectrum USRA 0-8-0 .

Here is a freelance 0-8-0 I build out of a micro-ace 2-8-0 chassis& motor ( 51  inch drivers) using a Bachmann 2-8-0 boiler / cab shortened to fit there sideways motor. The cab is the only place the stock motor would fit. Reshaping the  cylinders was the hardest part and I feel they are a little small for the engine.
and the tender is a spectrum USRA short with a modified Atlas tender shell.  This type of  tender would also be useful on other steam locomotives.

Just a idea.       Bachmann thanks for your great running steam.

N / Re: N scale loco gears

You can find used engines with newer gears on ebay. Look for engine with Black axle gears. I up graded some Plus F7s with the Non DCC spectrum chassis.

I came up with the tender I like for my mallet.

Older spectrum USRA medium tender with the coal bunker from the Atlas 0-8-0. I did a little sanding the the Bachmann coal load and glue the new bunker to the top.
The Atlas tender seem just too short for the large engine. I like the look of the spectrum tender with the high coal bunker.

If I was keeping it I would add tender pick ups.

N / Santa Fe 4-8-4 modifications
August 24, 2016, 10:16:53 PM
I just was testing this engine to sell it,but I started working on it to see if I could make it look better.
Added cylinder detail , painted the and re gauged the  wheels ,  lowered the tender height by sanding down the truck bolsters, added dummy coupler to the pilot.

This thing really needs tender pickup.   Possible up graded 4-8-4 in the future Bachmann?

I have used the spectrum USRA short tender chassis with the old Atlas/Riv/con-cor 0-8-0 narrow bunker tender shell. I just sand down the shell to the height that I want and add a piece of electrical tape to the insides of the shell and it fit the Bachmann chassis great.

here is a project using the Bachmann tender chassis
and trucks and a spectrum 2-8-0 boiler and cab with the front pilot from the Bachmann 0-6-0
