Pete I can't help you with a diagram but I did this exercise a few times before with Bachmann and Broadway limited models.
I used a multimeter set to the Ohms scale and the beeper to measure the lowest conductivity on one wire at a time and labelling them after measuring.
It is laborious work but it's the only way to find out where what is running.
You will have to take the loco apart unfortunately to do this.

you could look for a professional motor like Faulhaber or Maxxon.
They are brushless and usually come with ball bearings.
What type I don't know, there are so many.

I've never heard of that system, but it looks ideal for this setup considering it would eliminate hiding E-Z track and extra wires.  It's also rather inexpensive for a DCC controller.  Looks like the only other hardware the OP needs is two pieces of flex track, 4 feeder joiners, and a razor saw.

I bought it a year ago and it works fine.
You can also make a stop in the middle for a station.

To design a layout you need a drawing before you start building.
It also saves a lot of money by designing it on screen/paper.
I use the design program called "Anyrail".
It is free up to 50 pieces of track.
That should be enough for a small layout.
By using flex track you can make quit  a big layout before the program asks for registration.
You can also give the max size of the space available an choose the brand of track you want to use
when you are satisfied with the design you can print the design on a piece of paper.
You can even print it 1:1 and glue the prints together to use it as a template.

This smells like a short circuit to me.
you could measure the current that is flowing when measuring 4 and 17.5 Volts.
If the current is high when measuring 4 V there is a near short somewhere.

I can't recall the 2-8-0 ever having factory installed sound fitted.
mine, and i have a few, never came with sound.

if i am not mistaken the 2-6-6-2 has an old school decoder with or without sound.
The 2-4-4-2 has the "new" Bachmann add on sound unit to the existing dcc decoder.
That's the difference.
