There is also a article titled Built A Carrier.  It shows more pictures and contains a Bill of Materials.  This article is further down in the GRBLOG.

Everytime the tender is disconnected from the locomotive there is a risk of pulling/breaking wires.  Why take that chance?  Use a carrier.

Best way to pick the K-27 up is with fingers under the front pilot and the other hand with fingers inside the cab.  Would not recommend just lifting on the back edge of the cab roof.

Good to find out you are hard at work on a PnP R/C for the K-27.

In reference to your comment of the K-27 video clip on YouTube.  What was not mentioned is that the K-27 was running on rollers.  The bouncing shows up when the locomotive was run at what appears to be excessive speed.

Running on rollers at speed with a locomotive that has a suspension system will produce a bouncing. 

There are any number of video clips on YouTube of the K-27 running on track.  In those videos there is none of the bouncing  seen when running on rollers.

Obviously operating the K-27 back and forth on a test track will not produce any bouncing.

There is one correction that should be made to Kevin's response.

The roof on the Bachmann stock car is not held in place by the 8 tabs mentioned.  Big Hauler box cars have the tabs.



The roof and car sides are molded in one piece.  The above picture shows the interior of the stock car where the sides meet the roof.

Access to the interior is gained by removing the floor of the car.  The floor is held in place by small tabs along each side of the floor that fit into slots in the car's sides.

I received the painted unlettered version three truck Shay during late November 2006.  It did not have an owner's manual.
Here is what was packed with the Shay.
Three additional smoke stacks. (Hunter-Radley, Ruston, Lima Diamond)
Eight pages of documentation.
A video disk.
Coal load with coal spill.
Engineer and fireman figures.
Package of detail items.
Small vile of smoke fluid.
Additional water pipe.
Hook and Loop couplers.

Check my GRBLOG.  The referenced carrier for the K-27 is there with three pictures.  Also,  a previous posting about building a carrier for a 3 Truck Shay.

As I had mentioned, carriers are used for all locomotives that have tenders where there are wires that run from tender to locomotive.  Same holds for the three truck Shay.

Before we all go off into Fantasy Land how about Bachmann getting the K-27 corrected.  A little bag of brass shims just doesn't cut it. 

Rather than take a "straw pole" on the next great locomotive from Bachmann let's get what has just be released properly correct.  Then we can all indulge in our flights of fancy on the next locomotive! :o

Build a train carrier, then you don't have to unplug the tender from the locomotive.



This carrier is 40" long and 8" wide.

I started building carriers when the Spectrum American was first introduced.  Now I have a carrier for each locomotive that has plugs and wires connecting the tender to the engine.  Also a carrier for the three truck Shay.  Sure saves on plugs.

There is a loading ramp so the engine and tender may be run off the carrier on to the track.  I have battery power so the locomotive can be run off and on the carrier under power.  With the K-27 since it will free-wheel it could be pushed on and off the carrier.

Carriers are also great for transporting a locomotive when visiting another layout.

Large / Bill 375 Fix- Loose counterweights on K-27

Thank you for your clear and concise posting on fixes for the loose counterweights.

I didn't realize this was a national security issue, or whatever. :o

I followed your procedure with the K-27 today. For my K-27 it took .008 to tighten the counterweights on the axle shaft.  In fact two could have probably used .009.  I used brass from a shim pack that is intended for adjusting Model A Ford connecting rods.  When split each shim is .004, so two did the trick to get to .008.

Also took a file to the axle ends, since as you pointed out they are a tad too long to allow the counterweight to seat.

The K-27 is now tight as a tick, thanks to you.  The locomotive was approaching 38 hours of run time and I had noticed that the counterweights were just about to the point to cause a lock-up.  Now all the crank pins are in quarter.

Again, thank you for sharing the information.  We're ready to rock and roll again.  What a sweet locomotive. 8)

Bachmann supplies journal box covers with its new 1:20.3 tank cars. In the parts package there are four journal box covers and four hinges.



You can see the four covers and hinges in this picture.  Guess Bachmann decided to supply extras since losing these covers was an issue with the first three cars they introduced.  Checked the K-27 parts bag, but no extra covers provided.

Since I have all the covers glued closed these are extras.

Hartford Products part number is HP-55. A package includes 2 ea., angle cocks, hoses, glad hands, and mounting brackets.

I would think the part number has not changed, although the packages I have were picked up at the ECLSTS last year.

Johnson Bar moved toward center of quadrant is known as the Brotherhood notch.  Reason being that less steam is used so the fireman, a member of the Brotherhood, did not to have to work so hard.

Company notch, Johnson Bar far forward, used more steam thus the thought being that freight/passengers moved faster to the benefit of the Company.  The fireman be hanged!
