The initial impression on removing the screw is that nothing has happened.  Again, ease the water tank to the rear and up.
BTW, has anybody converted the SP style hand rails to something close to C&O style - IOWS - useful only to somebody crawling on the running broard?  ;D

General Discussion / Photo album suggestion
February 13, 2007, 08:16:27 AM
How about a table of contents in the very front of the photo album, so we know where to go easily?

BTW, If you have kids who know nothing of steam, I'd try Strasburg first.  followed by Steamtown (forgive the goof) and then WMS and EBT in whatever order.  There is also a trolley museum at the EBT station in Orbisonnia.  I really should ride it some day.
You will also see some beautiful country.

General Discussion / Re: new to model railroading

Glenn, the PRR K4 was not used for freight and probaly not on many branchlines.  It was a heavy Pacific.  The solid pilot is probably a part of the GREAT STREAMLINING EXTRAVAGANZA!  No real reason for it, though at high speeds perhaps the wind got deflected from passing under the locomotive, though I'd think that lift would be negligible.
Solid seems modern.
Oh, well.

Mark,
Let me echo Lee's suggestion.  the East Broad Top is well a visit to both ride it and explore it.  If you time your visit correctly, you can ride the Western Maryland Scenic on Friday and the East Broad Top on Saturday.   Be warned that the closest motel to Orbisonnia is more than 20 miles away, but it is nice.
Don't forget to turn east to hit Strasburg and then Railtown (?) Strasburg is in the middle of Amish country, so lots of buggies.

HO / Re: Running DC and DCC concurrently
February 12, 2007, 05:09:09 PM
Let me suggest that you wire the sidings for DCC, but have a switch to turn the DCC power off on those sidings.  Then when you run a DC locomotive onto the siding, you stop it and turn off DCC on that siding.  Yes, you will need to isolate the siding.  Bridging DCC and DC is not a good idea.

HO / Re: Delta trailing trucks

If they fit, I'd get Delta trailing trucks for all my light Mikes, light Pacifics, light Mountains, and Texans.  That would be about 15.

Look midway between the trucks and you should see part of the brake mechanism.  Next to it is a hole.  In the hole is a screw.  Unscrew just that screw, then take the top rear of the water tank and ease it back and up.  The curcuit board is exposed.  You get into the coal bunker by taking a small flat bladed screwdriver or thin knife blade and prying the load up and out.

Right, Hunt.  I'm hoping I will have two guys to help with the wiring.  One is a DCC expert and the other is a fair electrician (model railroad variety.)

HO / Re: USRA 2-6-6-2 BACHMAN Spectrum

I have a Tsumani in one and an MRC in the other.  The Tsunami is easier to program.  The MRC is easier to install.   Blind tests give the MRC higher marks than the Tsunami.

Mark,
I don't know whether the SWM is for profit or a non-profit.  I guess it wouldn't be too hard to find out.  I know the whole complex is telling the story of Cumberland as a historic part of American transportation:  National Road, first gap through the mountains into the west, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, etc.  I think it's the only place in the U.S. where you can see an interstate highway bridge pass over a canal boat basin and see the smudge of coal smoke on the modern bridge.

The NMRA 8 pin plug is in the tender.  Cut the capacitors.  If you want a sound decoder, put the speaker under the coal load with small holes (#70 or smaller) drilled in it and a hole in the rear bunker sheet to allow the wires between speaker and decoder.

General Discussion / Re: Doorbell wire

Thanks, Nathan.  I will use Digitraxx, if , for no other reason, my club uses it and other local modelers do, too.  I had planned on using at least two boosters.
I think you solved my wire gauge question.

They are going into my "unreal railroads" train.  I think the G&D drover caboose will  be in the mddle, deadheading someplace.  ;D

G'day, Mark.
I'm sad to hear about the problems with 3801.  One of the things that helped Scenic Western Maryland was a petition.  The logistics means that a lot of the riders will spend the night in or around Cumberland, Maryland.  The comments section of the petition made that clear.  I not only bought a ticket, but I had a motel room, had dinner and breakfast in Cumberland and lunch in Frostburg.  I'm sure many did the same thing.
