Large / Dateline Denver snow plow video
December 21, 2007, 08:18:55 PM
Mike, here is the promised video.  Visiting my son in Denver we decided to plow snow on hi layout which is now under construction after a move to a new home.   We were going to use a Bachmann Connie and the Aristo wedge plow, but he didn't want to risk the Connie.  He has used the connie inthe past to plow but only in 2 inch deep snow. He ran the connie backwards pushing the plow behind the tender to avoid derailments caused by the long front coupler on the front of the connie.  He decided to use four of his D&RGW USA trains diesels to push the Aristo wedge plow through the snow which started at about  2 inches deep, and gradually increased to about 12 1/2 inches in a drift.  Next time we will get a better video. We plowed a few feet and saw that it was successful, and then backed up to go with a bit more speed. I kept increasing the speed till we hit the drift and stalled.  We backed up and hit it a gain and made more didtance.  We backed up a third time and went right through.  We were so excited we forgot to video the last two hits, which is a shame.  Now that we have some experience we will get a bettere video next time!!!!

Were we having fun or what!!! ;D ;D ;D 8)

Brian is right if you just bought this new take it back and excange it for another set.   If you bought it on Ebay take up the issue with the seller.

If you are experienced you can remove the bottom plate and use your meter to check the wires where they attach to the motor. if dead there, then pull the front off the smoke box to expose the back of the switches,  check there for loose wires and solder as necessary.

If all else fails you can contact Bachmann and send it back for repair or replacement.  If it is brand new you will have to bear the cost of shipping to Bachmann and they will fix it and pay the shipping back.   You will need the receipt from an authorized dealer and or the warranty card.  You will find the latest warrnaty info on the Service/Parts tab just below the T in the Bachmann trains lettering at the top of the page.
Good Luck

The 97 series cars are from 1992.  They were in the catalog from 1992 to 1997 and are replaced by the newer 89xxx series.   Unless you can find a dealer with lots of the old stock you are out of luck.

Best bet would be EBay, but ask questions to be sure you are getting what you want.  Many sellers don't give much detail.

Happy hunting.

Glad we could help and no question is a rookie question as far as I am concerned.   Although they rarely show up on EBay you might be able to aquire a second set and that would give you an extra coach.  The observation would look ok as well.

Forgot to mention that I am not sure if the observation car in set 90059 is lighted or unlighted.

Cheers

I have been unable to confirm what is correct on the 89391 cars.  Both have the same number in the catalog.

The Lake Spirit car is only available in set 90059 so far, it is not lighted and has plastic handrails.

97xxx series cars have track power lights and metal railings.
89xxx series cars have battery powered light and plastic railings.

All full Baggage cars are not lighted regardless of number.

Might be more than you want, but I hope it helps.

Happy railroading

The Seller is correct.  Set 90059 White Pass & Yukon was the first NOT Christmas Starter set to have an anniversary 4-6-0.   It is listed in the 2007 Bachmann Catalog as a Limited Edition Set.

The White Pass Annie Item 81096 has been around since 2000 and has been in every catalog since then.

Prior to this sets with Annie's have all been Christmas Sets.

Hi!

The Bachmann 90036 Polar Express was one of the nicest sets in the line.  Unfortunately Bachmann rights to the Polar Express ran out and were picked up by Lionel.   I'm not sure if that is why there were no additional cars made to match the set.   The set has loco no 1225, coach 1985, and Observation 2000.   In many cases Bachmann made matching cars which for this set would have been a full baggage and a combine.   regrettably this never happened.

The record hgh price paid for this set on EBay was $700 last year.

Take good care of it and Merry Railroading.

Rich it was a blast ;D, and I was suprised because the snow stood for two days and was a little on the damp side.

He made a video and if we can figure out how to we will transfer it to his computer.  We don't seem to have the right cable.

We did have to let the locos drip dry in the basement.   His layout runs from inside the house through a hole in the siding and we were able to start the train inside and get some speed before hitting the snow!

They definitely looked real all covered with the snow!!!!

I bet those guys on the Sandy River weren't having fun like we do, and I know the Rock Island crews weren't having fun either.   They thought we were crazy to be out there taking the pictures.

More snow coming here friday.  Darn we will have to clear the line again ;D!!!

Best,

I am visiting my son in Denver, last Sunday we ran a plow train consisting of two USA TRains GP38's, two SD40-2's and and Aristo wedge plow weighted very heavily.    We plowed through six inches of snow with no problems.   We reached a drift 14 inches high at the peak and about 3 feet wide and stalled halfway through.   We backed up and hit it again and made another 18 inches forward progress, after a third shot we broke through.

It was a lot of fun, and brought back memories of the wedge plows I saw on the Rock Island between Colorado Springs and Limon.  The models were covered in snow just like the prototype RI GP9's and U25B's that pushed the prototype plows.    In super extreme conditions the RI used to borrow a UP Rotary.   That was a sight to see, but that is another story.

Happy Railroading to all.........
