Actually the Portland Traction Company was in the loggong business.  They used Electric traction to haul log to the mill near Portland Oregon.  After they reached the steeper grades  in the higher country, they did use six shays.   I am told that the shays pulled the log cars to the end of caternary and the steeple cabs took over from there.  It was all standard guage.

Seems there is a prototype for everything!!

I have a copy of a photo of the Dog Fish Head IPA reefer which was listed as Item 98695 in the 2007 Catalog with no picture.  It is a G item rather than On30

It is supposedly a pre producton picture.

The pic  shows Dark Brown ends and roof with golden tan sides.  The end lettering is white and the side lettering is a brick red.  I haven't seen one yet, but the picture is sure nice!!

Maybe the Bach man will enlighten us on the details & status!

Here is some info That may be of help

Because of the large number of Bachmann  Trains sold, especially during the holidays, It can be very hard to get through on the Bachmann 800 number.  Same is true of email which often goes unanswered due to the overly high volume.

It is best to use the Bachmann commercial phone line 215-533-1600 and ask for service.  I have attached the Bachmann Warranty information below.   I have personally received great service using the number above.  I am told the fax number works well too, but cannot personally confirm this.   It is the best warranty in the business, but you may have to wait for your repairs if the volume is high.

Warranty Information

Bachmann's Lifetime Limited Warranty covers motorized units only. Under the warranty, Bachmann can decide whether to repair or replace an item at their discretion.

Items less than a year old are fully covered and will be serviced or replaced at no charge when accompanied with warranty card or proof of purchase.

For items more than one year old, there is a nominal service charge for repair or replacement:
$10.00 -   Â·  HO & N Diesel
$15.00 -   Â·  HO & N Steam
$20.00 -   Â·  DCC On Boardâ,,¢ and Spectrum® HO and N scales
$25.00 -   Â·  Williams O Gauge and Spectrum® On30
$30.00 -   Â·  Standard Line large scale (except Anniversary Edition 4-6-0 locomotives)
$50.00 -   Â·  Large scale Spectrum® and Anniversary Edition 4-6-0 locomotives

All accessories, power packs and speed controllers, and Plasticville USA® items are covered for 90 days only.

Orders, repair inquiries, or general inquiries may also be sent to:

81598 was first sold in 1989.  It was included in Bachmann Set no 90017 "The Lumberjack" which was in the catalog from 1990 to 1992 and was also sold as a seperate item.  It was in the Bachmann Catalog as a seperate item from 1989 to 1993.

I know of no lubrication instructions, but it is fairly straightforward.  Loosen the bottom plate to expose the gears and use plastic compatible grease (at hobbyshops) to coat the gears.  Use plastic compatible oil and lightly oil all moving parts and axles.  Mine has given good service for years in spite of the weak gears.

Steve is right there are no replacement parts, but these units appear fairly frequently on Ebay.  I love mine and if it ever breaks I will get another to run or for parts and keep the broken one to sit on the deadline at my loco shed.

Enjoy your engine and get hooked by the hobby!!!!

Hi Joe, As always I appreciate any and all tips and info on Bachamnn sets and all pieces of rolling stock and motive power.

I am aware of this set, Bachmann made it for the Weiul McLain company which gave them to their customers as a promotional gift.  This is one of the early radio control sets rather than a track power set.

There are still some mysteries about this set I would like to know.  The words "Contractor Collection Series No.3"  appear on the box the set comes in.  So did Bachmann ever make a 1 or a 2.  As best I know they never did.  So why did they call this set number 3 ???    The other question is how many were made?   I have never been able to get any information on this.

This is one of the Bachmann sets that shows up on Ebay every three months or so.  Many sets have been broken up and the Weil Mclain Boxcar shows up seperately on Ebay from time to time.  It is a great looking car!!

Thanks again Joe and keep the tips comming.

I would like to ask that any viewers out there who have any information on a Bachmann Set also Radio Control from the 1989-1991 period called the "Green Lightning" Set 90101 Please contact me.  It was never in the catalog.   I know absolutely nothing about this set other than one photo I have of it.

Any and all help is always appreciated, as I am trying to put a book togeher about Bachmann Large Scale and remain an unofficial historian of Bachmann  Large Scale.

General Discussion / Re: Which Lead is Negative?
January 19, 2008, 10:50:57 PM
It doesn't matter, just pick one lead to use as the common, and stay consistant between blocks and cabs.  A way to check when adding a second power pack (cab)is to use the first and start the train in forward motion.  Shut off the block and then touch the leads from the second power pack to the track, if the engine still goes forward note which wire goes to which track and keep things consistant.  If the engine goes in reverse switch the wires. You should be ok.
