Remember the Sierra "charging system" expects a gel cell, both in charging type and voltage. You NiMih pack matches neither.

Does not mean it won't work for a while before the batteries are damaged...

if it is new why mess with it, return it

Chris, unfortunately parts for G scale trains, across all manufactures is often an issue. The base issue seems to be that most parts only make sense to produce when a production run is done.

Add this to the vagaries of production quantities (marketing guesses), and it's a problem. (note there are things like couplers, wheels, etc that are in stock)

Also realize that a product is normally discontinued when out of stock, not at the last production run.

So, parts are almost always an issue, even for high volume expensive (read profitable) locos.

Your best advice is to try to find one for parts, but of course the parts you want to be good are the ones that failed on yours!  ::)

Good luck, Greg

I have the manual for the 11090 and 11091 autoreversers. The soft start and slow down are built into the system according to the manual. If someone needs the manual, email me.

A string of a few 3 amp diodes in series with one motor lead is easy and cheap.

I think you can also take some nylon washers, take a small notch out just enough to snap over the axle but not so much as to allow it to come off.

I agree with Loco Bill, I'm befuddled too.

Also, check your track gauge. Having a driver drop inside the rail on a 20' curve makes no sense.

My first instinct would indeed be gauge of the drivers.

So please report back driver gauge (all of them) just inside the fillet (the transition area between the flange and the tread), and the track gauge, through your switches.

Something does not make sense yet.

Thank you Bill!

Am digesting your pm and will reply. While I have a great interest in all G scale, I only model 1:29, so the only Bachmann I have is a couple of 1st or second gen Big Haulers... I sold my Annie and shay some time ago.

Maybe someone will take the bottom cover off their gen 6 and shoot a picture some time.

Much appreciated!

Stan, looking at the documentation, it appears these are an IR transmitter LED and an IR photodiode/phototransistor.

So the on/off resistance of the phototransistor works just fine with the reed switch input?

(I know that is what you just said, but confirming)

Thanks Bill, yes a great reference page you wrote there!

Yes, I talk to TOC several times a week, and we are just about done with my "big hauler" page:

https://elmassian.com/index.php/large-scale-train-main-page/motive-power-mods-aamp-tips/bachmann-motive-power/big-hauler

And now we are documenting all the BBT conversion information we can get, since it's not anywhere else on the net.

I may have to buy a new Annie just to get a picture ha ha!

If you want to exactly sync the rate and position, you will have to work with the IR sensors, actually just one, since the Mallet exhaust is only heard from the final set of cylinders.

The exploded parts diagram has the wiring diagram too:

https://www.bachmanntrains.com/home-usa/dwg/dwgs/82894.pdf

You should be able to get recommendations on wiring from Phoenix.

Thanks Bill, TOC does not have any version 6 chassis....

Thanks for the response, keep an eye out if you will.

Any progress on this issue?

bill, do you have a picture somewhere of the version 6 gearbox?

I've been working with TOC on compiling a history of the gearboxes and versions 1-6 and would sincerely appreciate you taking a look at this page for mistakes:

Thanks,

Large / Re: SSpectrum 4-4-0 different gear problem
August 25, 2019, 04:19:18 PM
He's talking about 2 different things at the same time:

1. the damaged "dual" worm gear, that contacts the worm on the motor (usually caused by the motor mounting screws loosening or excessive bearing wear in the motor.

2. and some discussion about the axle gear having a D shaped cutout, which seems different from the old style, and apparently NOT the cause of THIS failure.

There was also some confusion about not understanding that the worm gear tooth angle makes it unique from all the other gears in the gearbox, and also some other talk about bypassing some of the gear train.
