On30 / New On30 2-6-0 Video
April 19, 2020, 08:41:02 PM
Hi, guys!
Just a couple of questions, and link to my newly posted youtube video showcasing my two Bachmann 2-6-0 Moguls.
First, the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hu5n6HDeZXI
Please note that these 2 trains are not historically accurate representations of trains that were/are actually operated on the D&RGW , or Durango & Silverton lines! Yes, Ton,I'm talking to you my friend! LOL!
Now for the questions:
These trains have been derailing at higher speeds than what you see them running at in my video. I believe that it's due to their perhaps needing a larger amount of weight in either the cars, or tenders.
They always derail at the tender/combine when the train passes over the rerailer, so I'm pretty sure that it's also a contributing factor to the problem.
The rerailer does not rerail the train, either.
I've noticed my H.O. scale trains also having a problem with the E-Z track rerailers as well,so perhaps a more traditional style of H.O. track will fix the problem?
Also, I recently replaced/ upgraded the couplers on 2 of the 5 cars with Kadee #148 "whisker" knuckle couplers. These couplers don't spring back into position like the original Bachmann E-Z Mate couplers do.
So, did I buy the wrong Kadee's, or is it just that way with these couplers? They still seem to hold on just as well as the originals did/do.
Lastly, the lights flicker pretty badly on all 5 of these cars. The track is clean, but the flickering is a problem.
Is there any way to solve this, short of taking them apart and replacing the lights with LED's, bridge rectifiers, and condensers like I did for my Bachmann G Scale Jackson Sharp cars?
Thanks guys!

On30 / Re: Bachmann Spectrum Rugged Ridge Set
April 01, 2020, 06:48:12 PM
Thanks! I found another one that was newly listed shortly after my last post here. Slightly used for $268.00 including shipping, and tax. Looks  good, and it is also a Broadway Imports model.I may buy it tomorrow morning. It will go well with these new cars.
Speaking of the new train, the Rugged Ridge set arrived a few hours ago. It's in very good condition, with a little cosmetic damage on the loco and a couple of broken tender steps, which are present and were easily glued back into place.
The cars themselves are near mint, with only a couple of broken couplers. I'd say that the set was still a pretty good deal for what I paid for it versus what I got.
Oh, and the 2-6-0 locomotive runs very sweetly. Too bad it doesn't have a sound system in it.

I found a nice C16 in On30 on Ebay for $409.91, tax included It's fully detailed and ready to roll.
It's made by Korea Brass (just not made out of brass).

Any good?

Thanks,Ton They are set to arrive tomorrow via Fedex. I'll test all 3 of them for that problem. It doesn't surprise one little bit.You get that a lot, even with the G Scale passenger cars that I have converted to LED lighting. I usually paint the interior of the roof in all of my  lighted Jackson Sharp passenger cars in gloss black due to this problem. I don't think that would work very well in this case as I assume that you're indicating that this is a problem with the car bodies.
Repainting the interiors of all 3 cars sounds like a real pain. I'm already working with the one combine that I mentioned. If I decide to try fixing this issue, I may mask off the black area with the road names, and then repaint the bodies in Pullman Green with black roofs, leaving the road name intact. I already have one G Scale car (LGB) that a previous owner did that to, and it looks pretty nice.
I'll figure it out one way or the other.
That book you mention sounds quite intriguing and definitely helpful to modelers who are looking to create a train with an authentic appearance.
I am unfamiliar with BLI.
Are your BLI C-16's On30,or other?
I know that Delton made some very nice C-16's in Large Scale, and I've considered purchasing one ,or two, but they would likely have a hard time running on my limited,5ft diameter rails.
Oh well.Maybe some day!

Hi,Ton. Thanks for the set info.
I figured it to be at least 10 - 15 years old. The units appear in immaculate condition ,and the price was right
I also just picked up a used C&S Bachmann coach for $35.00 earlier today on Ebay. I may remove the C&S lettering,or leave it as is.
I have a brand new,2 oz. bottle of TCP Pullman Green airbrush paint to work with, so I may repaint it to match the combine-which is getting an upgrade to a drover's caboose the Banta Pagosa Cupola Conversion Kit ! I found a way better deal on it,so, since I have the yellow D&RGW combine coming with the set I just bought, I figured to give it a try!
As far as the C-16 bumblebee, I visited it back in the summer of 1990 at the Pioneer Museum in Gunnison, Co. That was before it was repainted in the Bumblebee paint scheme. It was,as I remember it at that time, all black, and silver.  And it sat out in the open without the protection of the overhang that it has today.
Personally, I preferred it in black and silver.

On30 / Bachmann Spectrum Rugged Ridge Set

Hi. I just bought this set on Ebay. I got the #138 2-6-0,a combine, coach, and observation car in the set box for $78.00 + $25.00 shipping. No track, power supple,or video is included int the box.
Everything shown in the pictures looks to be in mint, undamaged condition.
Here is a direct link to the actual auction so you can see the item I bought:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BACHMANN-SPECTRUM-ROARING-RIDGE-RTR-On30-TRAIN-SET-AS-IS-NR/233536048580

I'm wondering if anybody knows how old this set may be,and if this is a newer version of the Bachmann 2-6-0,since the running number on the cab is #138, and I know that there is a very similar locomotive to this one that is numbered #136. Are there any appreciable differences between the 2, or is it only the last number?
Please tell me what you think!
Thanks guys!

Thanks! Great article. And those cars are beautiful. It definitely gives me a lot to think about. I may have to look into painting these cars in Pullman Green,as matching the Rio Grande Orange-Yellow paint scheme looks like a somewhat difficult thing to do. That, and I'm not a big fan of yellow! LOL!

"The cars wore a number of paint schemes while in service on the D&RGW. Before 1912, they were a rich maroon color with imitation gold leaf lettering and striping, mineral brown roof, black ironwork and "standard" brown trucks. In 1912, the lettering was changed to pure gold leaf and the striping eliminated. One of the USRA mandates from WWI was for railroads to use either coach green or Pullman green on their passenger equipment, and the Rio Grande went with the Pullman green color on the body, clerestory and trucks, with black roof and ironwork and the pure gold leaf lettering in 1918. The gold leaf lettering was changed to yellow paint in 1925."

I definitely like the idea of painting up the passenger cars in a WWI period paint scheme. More authentic to the time period that I would like to create for this ON30 scale train.

Thanks,Ton. I figured it out earlier this morning. I couldn't get the roof off, so I opened it from the bottom. The only problem with that was the wires for the light. I couldn't find another way, other than to cut them, and replace the wires after the repaint work and all is done.
The windows turned out to be a simple matter of working a thin Exacto blade under the clear plastic. The glue Bachmann uses for their windows is very weak, so it was easy to remove them without damaging them.
The only thing is that the platform ends, and railings, are glued onto the bottom frame, and they will break if I try to force them. I plan on painting the bottom with a rattle can of black satin. I'll have to mask off the railings, and then possibly use a fine brush to touch up the end caps.
I've got the body and roof prepped for primer and paint.I may try to match the paint scheme on my large scale drovers' caboose for this car,so I may go yellow/black/silver for this using my D&RGW large scale cars as painting models.and then,I'll be buying other cars that I want in either yellow or green factory colors/lettering on Ebay or ??
I may even buy a conversion kit that I found on Ebay that converts a Bachmann On30 combine into a drovers caboose! It looks really cool in the picture. It would require a little refitting of this car, but I think that it would look great on my layout.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/BANTA-MODELWORK-PAGOSA-WOOD-COMBINE-CUPOLA-CONVERSION-On30-Unpainted-Kit-BMT2125/362910119337?_trkparms=ao%3D1%26asc%3D225074%26meid%3D764513566f024e0aaaa4b159fd6ed67c%26pid%3D100276%26itm%3D362910119337%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2060778%26algv%3DSimplAMLv5PairwiseWeb&_trksid=p2060778.c100276.m3476

Something to at least think about while I've got it apart.
I've also decided to run the 4-6-0 as a dedicated passenger train hauling 3-4 cars ,and I'll be adding a few freight cars for my 2-6-0 . I now have enough EZ Track to run one track inside of another.
So,we'll see.

I now have a better understanding of why these cars are so relatively high priced by comparison to other scales.
I just received my first On30 passenger car. It is a Hawthorne Village Coca Cola combine. It's in nearly perfect condition. It's much bigger than I expected. And it positively dwarfs my H.O. scale rolling stock, but is still small by comparison to G Scale.
It's very nice and well detailed.
Now I have to figure out how to take it apart for repainting.
Including removing the windows without breaking them.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

On30 / Re: On30 4-6-0
March 09, 2020, 02:39:47 PM
Hi,Ton. I thought about that. I really did.But my Bachmann 2-6-0 was already lettered for the D&RGW when I purchased it.
I want to create a set of 4 to 6 cars that I can run with both of my locomotives without running up too much expense at the same time. That, and the fact that I didn't want to incur any further expenses detailing the 4-6-0,is why I decided to do it that way. gv
I do have an IHC flying Rio Grande logo Consolidation in HO scale that I bought a few months ago, but that needs it's own cars as well. For now, I'm concentrating on the ON30 locos.
I'm going to be using Bachmann cars for my D&RGW passenger set that I'll be repainting in an appropriate shade of green. I already bought a cheap Hawthorne Village Coca Cola combine(mint condition,$33.00including S&H) that I plan to disassemble ,and repaint with my airbrush using Badger Pennsy Green 16-21,which worked great for my USA Trains passenger cars. I have 4 of those in green, and 2 in the Bumble Bee scheme. Those 2 are factory painted
I would prefer to buy already made and lettered cars , but even the Bachmann painted , unlettered cars in olive green would run me $120.00 for a set of 2. And then there's still the cost of decals for them...
I run the USA Trains cars unlettered, so I may do the same thing with these.
Maybe...

I finally decided to reletter the tender for the D&RGW. I wet sanded the lettering off with 1,000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, repainted the tender satin black, to which I applied a coat of clear satin. I then waited a week for the paint to fully cure, and then hand applied some Microscale HO Scale letters and numbers to the tender.
It was then recoated with an additional coat of clear satin.
I think that the final result is quite pleasing!
Here's a short video I made this afternoon:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ny_ieQBxaPU

I hope that you will find the final results to be as pleasing as I do.

Thanks,Ton. I'm actually already watching that particular listing. It's not a bad starting price. I'm currently bidding on a red caboose that expires in a couple of days. I'll try bidding on that other listing if I lose out on the caboose.
I just stripped the lettering off the tender tank for my 4-6-0. It was then repainted with a satin black, and then covered with a coat of satin clear in order to help keep the new paint from getting scratched while I wait for the new D&RGW decals to arrive. I haven't ordered them yet, so it may be awhile before I get to the point of relettering it, but at least the paint is done for now.

Thanks, Len, but I'll pass. They wouldn't fit in with a D&RG/D&RGW passenger theme. I do like the freight cars, but I'm set on making these as passenger trains only.
Thanks for the link!

Thanks,Ton. That makes a lot of sense.I can see that adding a few cars for these 2 little locos is going to be a rather expensive ordeal. Unless I find a steal on Ebay. Which does happen from time to time.
I'm going to go ahead and alter my 4-6-0 for the D&RG. That way, I'll only have to buy a few passenger cars that both locomotives will match up with,as I prefer passenger to freight trains.
