Are the strands LED's? If so 4V is too high. LED's don't over heat, the burn out in a bright flash!.   Joe

HO / Re: adding sound to a Spectrum EMD F40 PH

Is this the old split frame or teh newer one? Running DCC sound on DC is limited. A sound decoder takes 6-7 Volts for the sound to come on and teh loco to move. You can't play the bvell or blow the horn. If it's a newer one click on link. Even though this is for teh old Tsunami, the newer board style Eco nami or Tsunami 2 will work .  Joe

Be aware that DCC sound decoders on DC won't start to work until around 7V. If you plan on getting several DCC sound locos, look into the MRC 1200 Tech 6 Sound Controller 2.0

HO / $25.00 locomotive
January 13, 2017, 10:34:08 PM
I was at one of the LHS a couple of weeks ago. They had a 25% off sale going on. I looked around a saw a Bachmann HO FTA DC on board for $25.00 plus 25% off. I bought thinking that if it didn't run I had the makings of a dummy unit. I got it home and took out the decoder and replaced it with a spare Sountraxx decoder I had. It runs great! I bought an F7B body for it and will letter it for my RR.    Joe

Are you running DCC? The reverser is for DCC only. If DCC did you gap both rails coming off both sides of the turnout?    Joe

What DCC system? Do you have more than 1 throttle? If so make sure the loco is not on both.     Joe

So do the lights blink alternately. I bet it's cooling looking in a dim room. I like the weathering job. Looks good. Hey Mr. Bach Man, please tell corparate to bring back the H16-44

So either the Econami or Tsunami2 board style. Also buy the speaker and encloser  from Bachmann for the sound value loco.  Joe

The Athearn body should fit with modifications to the B"Man frame : the weight on the ends will need to be cut back at least an 1/8 ", the front and rear pilots between the steps are closed on the B Man unit and open on the Athearn unit. The Athearn unit has a piece that goes under the couple pocket to fill the hole.  Look at the photos to see what I'm talking about.  Joe

Remove the tender shell. This board should be visible. In the center is a rectangular plug with 2 holes diagonal from each other. On top and bottom are solder that look like a L and 7. Remove this plug. A sound decoder with an 8 pin plug will now go there. There is room for a speaker in the bottom of the tender. Soundtraxx and others make sound decoders. Choose the correct sound file for the loco. . Make sure to plug in decoder correct way.Pin 1 is the orange wire. The plug will have a 1 or dot where pin 1 goes. Here is the schematic of the loco and tender.   Joe
