I guess you could do the same with a trailer.

General Discussion / Tourist lines
June 24, 2018, 11:16:10 PM
Just a general observation from riding various tourist RR's around the country - It disappoints me when we ride these trains that they couple the loco backwards to pull them. You have the tourists and rail fans taking pictures and video and all they get to see is them running backwards.
While transferring my videos to DVD, I was reminded that this is the case at Black Hills Central RR in South Dakota and at Yosemite Sugar Pine RR in California. If I remember correctly, I think Cass Scenic Valley RR has it the right way for half the ride and switches it to backwards for the ride back down or maybe it's vice versa.
I know it's not possible to turn them around if they don't have a turntable or a wye.
On the plus side, when we rode Black Hills Central, I was at the front of the train on an open car and got to film the front of 2-4-2T up close and personal as she huffed and puffed.

On30 / Logging cars
June 07, 2018, 04:14:51 PM
I redid my logging cars.
I gathered some branches and cut them in pieces. I sprayed them with matte finish and glued them together.
I had lost the original chains because I had them stored away for years.I went to big lots and bought pair of chains that had lockets. I cut the lockets off and sprayed the chains with flat black and flat brown. Then, I cut them into pieces.
The frames were a lighter brown. I mixed some black acrylic paint with water to thin it down and brushed it over the whole frames. Then, I used a paper towel to dab around on the frames.
The wheels were all silver. I put the rest of the frame mixture in a pill bottle and put all the wheels in there and shook them around to get them all coated. I set them out to dry and then put them back on the cars.

General Discussion / Locomotives on parade

I know I have never seen real locomotives in a parade going down a main street. 1939 opening of Union Station in L A.

General Discussion / Track bed washed away.
May 21, 2018, 10:41:53 PM
This was by my house. The tracks run behind my house on the other side of my block. This is about two blocks from my house by Main Street. The ground under the track just washed away. The Fox 2 News video.

This is a cool video. It's a documentary about logging in CA. in the 1940's.
The train footage starts at about 4:50 into it and goes to about 6:40.

On30 / Lighting the logging caboose
May 16, 2018, 05:52:56 PM
I want to put a light in my logging caboose.
Would Bachmann's tender trucks like these (Leaf Spring, Assorted (On30 2-8-0) Tender Truck $13.20 Model: 259XX-00W05) work under the logging caboose since (in the picture) it looks like they already have electric pickups?

On30 / Baggage car.
May 08, 2018, 11:30:52 AM
In another thread I lamented about losing some cars. I don't know where they are or where they have gone. I've searched all around the house and garage to no avail. I'm missing my baggage car,  my stock car, and a flat car.
I don't know why they wouldn't have been with the rest of my train stuff on shelves out in the garage house. I know I wouldn't have thrown them away. I know I didn't sell them. Some years ago I gave some HO stuff to someone but I'm fairly certain there was no On30 stuff in there.
Anyway, I've been searching on line for a few months trying to find another olive unlettered baggage car. Baggage cars aren't made anymore. I finally found one last night on an O scale site. It was reasonably priced which was great because of the rarity of it. I was happy to buy it. The only other one out there was in Germany I believe.
Now, I'll probably run across the old baggage car somewhere.

On30 / Log car chains
May 02, 2018, 12:33:17 PM
I dug my log cars out of my stuff in the garage and they are missing the chains. Would anyone know what size the chains are? Precision Scale has 10" lengths in a variety of sizes from 10 links per inch to 34 links per inch.

On30 / Doubleheading my Moguls video
April 22, 2018, 06:39:23 PM
I was playing with my trains on this rainy Sunday afternoon. I decided on a doubleheader with the new one and the backdated one. I used the four passenger cars and three freights cars and a caboose. No sweat at all going up my grade now.
Pretty easy to do the consisting with the E-Z Command. I guess that's why they call E-Z.

General Discussion / car cradle
April 20, 2018, 03:49:14 PM
Train cradle - When I went to change couplers on some on my train cars, I needed something to kind of hold them upright. Since there are small parts like smoke stacks and brake wheels and ladders, I needed something that wouldn't mess with those. My passenger cars were long so I would need something long.
I looked around at some of the boxes I had gotten small packages in but they were too short.
There happened to be a half full box of Kleenex sitting on the table while I was contemplating this. Then it hit me! Right in front of me was the perfect cradle with a soft cushion of Kleenex. I cut the hole larger with scissors and it worked great.
While I used it for On30, cut a smaller hole and use a fuller box and it would work for HO.

On30 / Coupler screws
April 19, 2018, 07:53:25 PM
Does anyone know where I can get coupler pocket screws? I looked in Bachmann's parts for sale section and they don't have them.
I don't know what size they are.
I was changing a coupler on my On30 caboose and lost a screw in my semi-shag carpet. I've been on my hand and knees, with a big light, searching and I can't find it. :(

I have two new Moguls that I bought in past few months. I have them as #4 and #5. 4 is the one I have been back dating. I can't remember if I even ran 5 after I took it out of the box and put it in the train cabinet to await back dating after I've finished 4.
Today, I put 5 on the track to give it a run and the EZ Command unit gave me the rapid flashing red light. I disconnected the tender and set the loco and the tender on the track separately. No flashing light with either of them. With them disconnected but both on the track, no flashing.
I hooked tender 4 to loco 5 and it runs fine. I hooked tender 5 to loco 4 and the red flashing light. Pull the plug out from the loco and no flashing.
That means something in tender 5 is messed up. I tried turning the tender trucks around but they physically won't turn all the way around. All four wheel sets have insulated wheels on one side and non-insulated wheels on the other side so that's not it.
Any ideas?

General Discussion / Prototypes
April 03, 2018, 07:15:30 PM
When I started backdating my Mogul, I was considering my options as to how to do the headlight because I had two box lights to chose from. I decided on the larger metal PSC light. I studied the Mogul light and the PSC light and I figured I could cut ream out the inside of the PSC one and slip it over the stock Bachmann light. That way I wouldn't have worry about doing any rewiring. It was a lot of work but I got it done.
I've seen folks on here say that there's probably a prototype for everything somewhere or words to that effect.
Today, I received Larry Jensen's book "The Hollywood Railroads  - Volume One - Virginia & Truckee".
I started reading it a little while ago and I got to page 10 where he is talking about how Paramount Pictures was having V & T's #22 fixed up to use in the movie "High Wide and Handsome".
Here is the quote from the book, "While Paramount was waiting for the boiler certificate, other work was performed. Before No. 22 left Carson City, the V & T shop crew had replaced it's smokestack with the woodburner-style stack off of No. 12. They also hid its electric headlight inside of the sheet metal housing from a 19th -century box headlight...."
I found my prototype!
Here is V & T's.

Here is mine.

On30 / My Mogul backdate saga continues
January 30, 2018, 12:07:57 AM
I received my new D&RGW Mogul today. It looks pretty good but I had my first incident with it. I set it down on the track and the curved plastic piece attached to the slider came off. I was finally able to super glue it back on but that was really really hard to do. Trying to lay the loco in a position on a sponge "cradle" and get it so I could put the piece on but not break anything on the side it was laying on.
I got the fluted domes from San Juan Car Co., too. It's cool that they are pieces. The steam dome is 3 pieces and the sand dome is 4 pieces. Before I assembled them, I put split shot in each level and poured white glue in to hold them in place. Then, I super glued them together. I  labeled the shot case 1 to 5 with 5 being the largest shot. I was able to 3 #4's in the bottom of the steam dome and 2 # 5's in the top part. On the sand dome, I got 4 #5's in the bottom and 2 #5's in the top. That will help a little with the weight.
I'll wait until I get all the pieces before I start on the locos. I have the new boiler coming from Bachmann for the old one. I have the stacks and headlights coming from PSC.
The domes

Gluing in the weights.

The old domes and the new domes

I did a test fit on the old boiler with the new domes.

On30 / Nut size on 2-6-0 driver
January 19, 2018, 06:04:06 PM
Does anyone know what the size is of the nuts that hold the rods to the wheels on the 2-6-0? Are they standard or metric? I need to buy some small nut drivers.

General Discussion / Making and adding weights
January 12, 2018, 05:30:36 PM
For any of you folks that create your own weights for your train stuff -
I want to add some weight to my 2-6-0 so I can pull three passenger cars up my figure 8. If I crank up the speed a lot, it will pull them without much hassle. When I try to slow it down some, the wheels spin a lot and it eventually makes it inch by inch.
I have a couple of 1/4 ounce weights on the front pilot but that isn't enough. I will try to custom make some weight to fit on the cab floor and/or maybe a thin layer on the frame.
In looking at Micro-Mark, they have three types of casting metal - 160, 180, and CT.
CT is almost pure lead. 160 is tin/lead/cadmium/bismuth alloy. 280 is tin/bismuth alloy; lead and cadmium free.
Would CT be the heaviest? I know tin is lighter than lead but I don't know about cadmium or bismuth.
I don't want to mess with bullfrog snot.

On30 / On30 combine
January 05, 2018, 11:10:53 AM
I just bought a new On30 passenger car unlettered in olive (26202). I really like the looks of these compared to the old single color ones that I have. No one has any combines in that color. Is there any chance Bachmann will produce combines in that color or rerun them if they already have?

On30 / Caboose sizes
December 11, 2017, 04:28:19 PM
Are the Bachmann offset cupola cabeese the same size as the center cupola cabeese? My center cupola one looks so large behind the Porter and Forney. I'd like to find a smaller one.
