It's a 28 ton shay built on August 14, 1914 in Lima Ohio.

26th August 1914 according to the Shaylocomotives.com website. Two truck 3 cylinder shay.

Clues - it is on an island with 15 other survivors. The railway owned 20 Shays. It weighs 28tons.

As I said, it, and other locos in its class were modified to make them unique Shays.

Alishan Railway in Taiwan
Alishan is a very famous forest Railroad in Taiwan. It is a narrow gauge (762mm) railroad. There are Shay Steam locomotives made by LIMA running there before. The last alive Shay steam in Taiwan is #26. Although, the steam didn't have regular run now, there are daily passenger service. If you ride the train, you can experience the triple loop around the mountain and 4 times switchback!

Correct except for the unique feature.

No 26 is restored and does run occasionally. Alishan Forest Railway is owned by the Forestry Department who are, how can I put this kindly, not very commercial. One of the Shays is on the Puffing Billy line in Australia. The rest are scattered around Taiwan in various locations.

Unique feature- the 28ton Shays had the gear pinion moved to the left side of the wheel on both trucks. All other Shays have them on the right- unless someone out there knows otherwise.

I saw it in person. Well, actually, I stood on it . It's come a long way. Before it was like that, it was a boiler hanging from the roof .

So far, it looks like that. Boiler tubes are clean and in place, the wooden cab (shell) is restored (but, obviously not it place ), and the tender is done.

I think the RR said it'll be up it 2008/9/10...
