A while back I read about using a capacitor to provide electrical backup for the occasional poor rail contact, which can happen even with regular rail maintenance. Has anyone done this? Any thoughts?

I add capacitors to my locos when possible.  Which loco would you like to modify?

If this is for DCC, a stay alive is what you want. Not for DC as far as I know.

Ah, right.  I'm so spoiled by DCC that I forget about analog control.

I did not explain very well.
Electrolytic caps are polarized. You cannot reverse the voltage like you do with DC layouts.
Assuming you have a DC layout.
