Hello Bachmann man,
I have been searching e-bay for months now for a Purdee & Curtin Lumber caboose to go with my shay engine. I found 1 caboose on e-bay lately but it is missing its roof, Can this be replaced as a part? I can buy a simular caboose with different road name fairly inexpensively if the roof is able to be removed and replaced without damaging it in the process. Appreciate any knowledge on this subject. Why are these road names so hard to find lately? Seems that I have found every road but Purdee & Curtin, go figure right!

Hi Dan,

I am not the Bach-man, but I can tell you that the P&C Caboose you want was first in the catalog in 1998 and was the logging caboose which has the flat roof with no coupola.  It was not a great seller and was in the catalog only til 2002 and was not rerun.

If you can find a Bobbber caboose on Ebay of the logging type it will be easy to swap out the roof.
This caboose has the correct roof for the P&C caboose, but is way overpriced:

If a coupola roof is OK with you you can go ahead and buy any bobber style with a coupola and add the roof to the P&C caboose assuming you win the P&C caboose.

This one has all you would need to replace the roof and it has the grab irons missing on the P&C caboose:

Th only down side is that the coupola on this one is red while the color of the P&C caboose is Boxcar red or Tuscan Red.  A little paint from the hobby store would solve that issue.

Or you can just wait it out and keep an eye out for a reasonably priced bobber with a flat roof.

Hope this helps.

Thanks loco Bill,
Can you tell me how the flat roof is attached to the caboose body?  It looks like it maybe glued onto the body from the photo on e-bay that currently has a p&c caboose for sale. I was hoping that I could replace the missing flat roof easily with another like kind bobber caboose. Much appreciate your vast knowledge on the subject.
Dan.

You should be able to replace the flat roof with another flat roof. It is not glued to the body.  Bachmann did not use glue except on windows. Since the one you are looking at on Ebay has been modified with the incorrect roof it is possible the owner glued it on.  There were early molds where the roof and body are one piece and the later molds where the roof was separate form the body so it is important to get the later style with the removable roof.

At one time Bachmann sold Kits to assemble your own caboose:

98917   None   None   2005   Caboose4   4 whl, Kit, Undecorated  Brand New  2 in box            metal wheels   $50.00    2 flat roofs & 2 cupola roofs

You could build 2 caboose cars from the kit and it came with 4 roofs, 2 flat and 2 with the coupola. this allowed you to build your cars any way you wanted.   Everything was press fit or screwed in place.  The roofs were not glued to the body.

I do not have one to look at so maybe another member can confirm the above.

I took this caboose and completely rebuild it into a more realistic bobber.
I made windows in the front and back of the cupola, cut the handrails of and made real ones, walk boards on top, ladders and repainted the whole lot.

Dan here is a more reasonable candidate for the roof from eBay...

I have been building bobber caboose models in g for a short time, currently waiting for some 3d printed parts. But i can make a bobber to order to fit your needs. my cars have full suspencion opening doors some under frame detail and lights. I do have a shell that would have a rear coupola but can be moved to the center if need be.
