I recently sent a bachmann spectrum g scale 2 8 0 consilidation White Pass Yukon 81296 through the post it was in the original packaging with sponge foam and there was no visible damage to box, however there now appears to be no drive to the wheels although motor runs, has any one got any idea what may have happened during postage

Hi Steve,

Sudden gear failure is not uncommon with this locomotive. Your locomotive is about 16 years old and has most likely had a gear failure due to age, which has been reported on here on the forum many times in the past.  The failure probably did not occur during transit, but happened when you tried to run it again.   I have two of the 2-8-0's and both have suffered the gear failure.   The first one happened a back in 2011 and happened when I changed direction during a switching operation.  The second one occurred last December when I took it from a storage shelf and put it on the track and tried to run it.  I had put it on the shelf if perfect operating condition.

The replacement part usually needed is:

Here are some instructions which may be helpful:

If you are not handy at making repairs yourself, you may want to send it in for repair.  If so I recommend you contact the service department to learn your options.

I wrote this before I saw the Yardmasters reply.   If the damage occurred when the Loco was shipped from Bachmann to you then please follow his advice.
