Hello,

I'm normally in HO, a big fan of big steam on the C&O, but I came across this page a while back looking up something else, and thought it should be shared; hope you enjoy it.

Although this is a site for a standard gauge road that ran steam until 1965, there is still a great deal of inspirational material, particularly on the logging operations page.  Question: how do you simulate fording a stream with a Shay in any scale?

BC&G 2-8-0 #14 is on static display in Gaithersburg, Md next to the original little B&O station. The station is still in use as half mini museum and servicing MARC train commuters.

You do know how to ask the good ones! 

Let's see, what thoughts?
I haven't done it. These are things to think through.

1. Prime Directive - keep flangeways free.

2.  might be best to lay rail directly on some kind of flat surface instead of ties. add something in a 'guard rail' location to keep flangeways free.
then cover surface with thin layer of "stream bed" material.

3. after that,  will 'water' be cut sheet material or poured liquid??

4. whatever water is simulated with probably ought to be at most only high as railhead level to allow model's gearboxes and such to clear.

5. as for specific technique for fitting water material around rails, uhhh . . .

6. will want to texture water surface to simulate disruption where it flows over rails.

That's what thoughts come for now.

Simulate?

With large scale you don't have to simulate.  Just cross the water!  We don't simulate snow when we are plowing.  Why simulate water when fording a stream?
