I just upgraded my old power pack to a EZ command with a DCC train included.  When I try to run my older engines, non DCC, they make a buzzing noise at start up and one of them was smoked, literally smoke coming from the engine after about 10 minutes of use.  The DCC engine included runs fine.  Has anyone else experienced this?

Yes, that's why it's not recommended to run DC locos on a DCC layout, even if the controller allows you to do it.
The motor of a DC loco can burn out very quickly when the loco is stationary.

The DCC signal is AC with digital information encoded into it. That is why the loco needs a decoder. Below is a link that will show you what is happening when running a DC. analogue , loco.
