Proper Grade Ratio

What grade ratio in acceptable in construction of a large scale indoor track layout?

What equipment do you plan to run, how long a train, and how heavy the cars?

My Dad runs short trains and 4% works okay for him.  Our club layout was designed over 20 years ago and has a 4% area where heavy equipment and long trains have problems.  Going the other way around the loop the grade up is 2% and very few trains have problems.
