Hi all, I consider buying one of the older 2-Truck Shay models (yes, those with the chronic gear problems...) Can anyone confirm that the readily available replacement trucks 88999 are compatible with these older models and that the gear problems are completely solved with the new trucks? Thanks, Peter

Peter,

Yes the replacement truck are compatible and were made to solve the earlier problems.

Hi Bill, thank you. Just to get into details: I mean the Bachmann No. 81196, 81197 and 81198 with my question for compatibility!? One more question: How difficult would you rate the replacement operation, any soldering to be done? Regards, Peter

Hi Peter,

I have never done a truck replacement, but several friends have done it some years ago and I do not recall if they had to solder anything, but I am  not sure.  I recall they did not think is was particularly difficult.

There are several threads here in the forum that may be helpful.  Go to the gray button above that says search and type in "shay replacement trucks" and set the search to include only "G" Scale. You will get a lot of information this way.

Hopefully one of the other members who has actually done it will add to this discussion.

Best of luck,

Bill
