How do you guys treat these locos, to run as one or separately?

Your not specific on which locos. You can run both ways.
With HO and DCC, I and others have run ABBA sets with a single pusher on the rear of the freight.

The DCC manuals have instructions on how to do this.

If both are with a decoder and you use a DCC controller, no problem. If you run them with a DC power pack, no idea on how well they will run together. Most locos will not run very well together on DC.
