N / Re: FACTORY STEAM DCC WITH SOUND LOCO HELP
November 12, 2011, 06:59:56 AM
Do you have a  Walthers 2-8-8-2 with QSI sound still available? Thanks Ron

First of all, Railtwister has obviously not heard the Walthers 2-8-8-2 with QSI sound it it if he thinks sound in N scale is not viable. I would put it up against any of the HO sound systems out there.

The only thing steam coming down the pike with built in sound in the near future is the Intermountain Cab forward and they may be 6 months or more out.

The only diesels with factory installed sound available in the near future are:

*Athearn F/FP45 (recent batch just hit stores a while back)
*Athearn F59PH (Just announced more roads this month)
*Broadway Limited E6A/B (supposed be here by Jan 1, not holding my breath)

As far as adding sound, you are pretty safe with any Kato diesel and the MRC drop in sound decoders. They take from minimal to zero modification to install. Just make sure you get the 18 or 1900 series decoders. They are the latest sound system and are much better than previous offerings. Check MRC's website to see what decoders they offer and then decide if there is a loco that you want from their availabiliity.

N / Re: FACTORY STEAM DCC WITH SOUND LOCO HELP
November 11, 2011, 02:54:57 PM
Maybe I should rephrase this a little. I want to add another loco to my track which is small and DCC run. I like steam and I have a N scale challenger, N Walthers 2-8-8-2, a Bachmann N Spectrum heavy mountain with a Digitrax DCC and sound decoder, and a Spectrum N N & W with a Tsunami 750 installed. Something else would be nice to add this year. A Stream loco is my favorite to add but if I find an easy install DCC and Sound diesel I would give it a shot. A factory install would be the way to go but if its a real simple DCC AND SOUND plug and play this would be OK. Maybe suggestions will be easier if I try an easy DCC sound install. Gotta be easy plug and play. My other installs were too much worry. Thanks Ron

N / FACTORY STEAM DCC WITH SOUND LOCO HELP
November 10, 2011, 06:49:39 PM
I am working with steam and wondered if any new N locos have come out in steam with factory DCC and Factory sound. I'm out of the loop for knowing whats on the market. I thought you guys would know. I might be forced to get a diesel which would fit into the late steam era if you could recommend a brand and name with factory DCC and factory sound. Any help would be great. Thanks Ron

N / Re: WIRING HELP N SPECTRUM N&W

You saved me! It did run with the 2 wires backwards but it may have done damage with the Tsunami hooked in. I fixed it thanks to you just before I tested it on the track with the Tsunami installed. I had the two wires opposite. Do you know of any factory DCC sound steam loco available now? Thanks Again Ron

The outermost wire should be left rail pickup. You can test that with a multi meter with the harness unplugged from the tender. I believe the next one in is a motor lead, can't remember if it is + or - though.

I was hoping to work on this this weekend. I called yesterday but know one got back. Is there a way to tell which wire goes where in the plug as two came off. See pic above. Thanks Ron

If what your saying is true there shouldn't be a problem with wires touching. Great! I should be good. I did paint the outside black again. Now how do I find out if these two wires that came off are in the right positions. I soldered them back where I think they go but afraid to hook up a Tsunami 750 sound unit and burn it out because the two wires were in the wrong positions. Is there a way to know if the wires are in the correct place? Here is a pic showing the two wires, marked in blue are the two that came off, and now re-attached hopingly correctly. Thanks Ron

the wires are coated with clear lacquer insulation, with the part that shows outside of the loco painted black.

Two of the wires came off their solder connections. I marked them on the plug in BLUE SEE PIC. I connected them but could use some way to test to make sure they are in the correct spot. Anyone able to help me with this? Don't want to burn something out when I try it. Thanks Ron

N / SLIPPING GEARS IN SPECTRUM N HEAVY MOUNTAIN
September 30, 2011, 07:06:12 PM
Is this a common Spectrum problem? The heavy mountain backs up stops and stands there until I go forward a bit and than put in reverse again than it moves backward again. Is there a fix for this? Don't want to send back as I have installed DCC and would have to remove the DCC. Ron

General Discussion / BACHMANN QUALITY QUESTION
September 30, 2011, 02:54:38 PM
I had a Norfolk and Western N loco that wouldn't work for crap. It seemed to be a problem with no connection in the tender car to the track. Which I was able to fix. Than it stopped working totally. I sent it back and it was replaced with what  looked like a used loco or serviced loco. Upon opening it to install a DCC unit I found wires with no covering and possibly shorting. I didn't run this loco before this as I have only DCC. Is there a best way to coat these wires so they don't cause problems? Hope it work after the install of DCC. SEE PIC.  THANKS RON

N / ANY NEW FACTORY STEAM LOCOS WITH DCC AND SOUND
September 29, 2011, 02:27:43 PM
I really don't know whats available but thought I would ask to see if people on this site might know. I have a Walthers Heritage steam loco with DCC and sound and a Athearn Challenger with DCC and sound. Both great trains and nice factory built steam locos. Are there any other new or older factory steam locos available. Are any new steam locos coming out soon. Thanks for all your help. Ron

N / DCC WILL THIS WORK?

Dcc will this work?

DCC WILL THIS WORK
I have a total DCC Layout in N scale. Can non DCC Locos be left on the tracks while you run the DCC locos? Will Non DCC locos be hurt by this? Using the non DCCs for decorations. Thanks Ron
