The other alternative is to have decals that are custom made.  I had Rail Graphics do a set for my Jemez & Rio Grande.  They will create a decal from custom art or just lettering in your choice of quite a few type styles.  The cost is not cheap (I guess) - about $45 for 25 sheets of decals (if you want single color decals).  That single order has lasted me several years.  If you go back to them for more, cost declines.  At any rate, they have a pdf catalog that explains it all.

That conclusion must have been reached since this past May.  When I rode it in mid-May, they were very proudly announcing the acquisition of an SP&S steamer (a Mikado, as I recall) with the idea of adding horsepower to pull the cars without the aid of their FA units!

A pity, if it's true.  The steam was great fun!

I would argue that there ARE, indeed, other model railroad magazines out there, besides RMC and MR, that provide plenty of inspiration.  MR may be pretty picky in their content and acceptance rate ... if they can afford to be, so be it.

I suggest that you check out issues of magazines that may not particularly have a title that exactly fits your particular scale.  For example, there's lots of good stuff in O Gauge Railroading and O Scale Trains and, if you are really into detail, exquisite modeling, scratchbuilding, etc., no magazine can beat the content of Narrow Gauge and Shortline Gazette.  So what if it's narrow gauge, the techniques are the same!

Welcome to the world of incredibly addictive On30.  After 20+ years of HO modeling, I switched after buying one of those "cute" moguls for under the Christmas tree (it never made it, by the way).  After four years of On30, I am still thrilled with the decision ....

I model a fictional branch-line splitting off from the old Chili Line in northern New Mexico.  Runs from Espanola into the Jemez Mountains ca. 1951.  It's On30, not On3, but close enough for my tastes.

I'll second that request for that article on installing the Sounder.  I've got a gas-mechanical or two that are desperately in need for some sound.  I know that Allan will be happy to publish your article.

Although I hate to give any model railroad seller a black eye, these guys seem to go out of their way to earn it.  I have placed (and cancelled) two orders.  Although they list the stuff as "in stock", it may take over six months for them to actually "allocate" the material from their warehouse (as far as I can tell, it's about 1200 square feet) to your order and then an additional 6 or so weeks to deliver.  I have chosen to avoid them.  I do know that some people have had good luck.  If you want to see lots of comments, there is a message string some 17 pages long at the Model Railroader message board about other people's experience.

Although Soundtraxx doesn't make them anymore, you can still find the old PNP decoders on eBay and other auction sites.  They sound pretty darned good for a little bit less than the Tsunami or loksound.  I've been able to purchase a couple of them for around $50.  I may even have an extra lying around.  If you are interested, I can let you know in about 24 hours.  By the way, the Shay PNP has the same sound chip and will probably work as well.
