HO / Re: Athearn Blue Box Recall from the 1980s
August 31, 2010, 02:06:23 PM
In the mid 60's I had several cars made by Crown, such as the 200ton
4 truck flat car with a pipe load another was a 3 dome tank car.
They were dead ringers of the Athearn cars.
How did this happen?

Tenshodo clearly makes it in a small square brass plate soldred
to all their products that I have.

Home Depot has the $3.00 off with  your old string.
Saw this on a U.S. station, may or may not apply in Canada.

PD,

LED's throw a cone of light off the end.  The cone is about as narrow as the beam of a full size spot light bulb.  This is great if you want to light a display in a store window, but not much use if you want to light up all the windows.

I have had good luck with some  larger surface mount LEDs
They are not a focused and appear to be in light fixture where I have them mounted on walls in buildings.
I have several sets of 3 LEDs in series, run off a 5v regulator.

Question for you,
have you pulled apart a string of LED Christmas lights?
I notice when I turn my head quickly near them I see a flickering effect.
Looks like half wave, am guessing they are only using one diode in the string?

The new steam generator car by Rapido,
has smoke that's supposed to be steam
directed down to the rails.
Is this leaving a residue on the tracks?

Just happened at the Laurel Apple and Wine museum in Kelowna B.C.
Was a 20+ year old large layout depicting the old packing houses and water front with rail wharf, nicely done.
The building received a major grant to refurbish it,  the wine sales area is the money maker for the museum not the layout.
The layout was just dismantled and the assets were split among
the members. They talked about looking for another location which would be next to impossible to find but the killer was the fact that all but one
of the members are 60-80 range with no interest in starting over.

My friend who uses NCE was showing me a snubber schematic. Then I see it in the Sept. M.R.
The cap is mis labled should be 50-150 volts not ohms.

I am using Digitrax radio but the brand is irrelevant.
I have now installed this on my layout.
Anyone else bothered to assemble and install one?
Any point?

I just ordered 2 decoders for my BLI blueline HO Alco RSD 15's just recently purchased and the decoders are Digitrax DZ 143PS with lock, for HO, N, and Z scale, the size of a dime. It already has sound but with DC, so I ordered a decoder that was recommended and it's just a simple plug in with the sound decoder.

Little change of topic  here, I am still in therapy after doing battle with Bluelines.
Programming was easy but I lost the sound for no reason
in  2 SD-40 at the same time.
Finally restored the sound but was not fun. Am using the PR-3 as well.
Cannot read back CVs properly in Bluelines. Using 2 decoders just makes room for so many problems.

HO / Re: Bachmann motor

Thanks for the tips on getting the brass flywheel off.
The only metal with a gap in it that I had was a claw hammer with
a loose handle.
I was able to twist off the business end of the hammer and put the
claw in a vice.
After getting nowhere with several hits, I took my Propane torch to the
brass flywheel  to expand it without melting the plastic  coupler inside.
A couple more hits and it came off.
A picture shows what did not get done right when it was assembled.
The copper wire motor winding is shown below the solder pad.

Using my smallest tip I was able to solder it, reassembled the motor and now works correctly.

HO / Bachmann motor

My Bachmann motor with brass flywheels on each end has developed a flat spot.
I have to give the motor a spin to get it to go.
I was thinking I would like to get it apart to see if there is a wire off one of the segments or just to see if I can find the problem.
Anyone had one of these apart?
Removing one brass flywheel could be a problem, ideas?

Bachmann sent me a new motor, and the old one back as well
so this one is something I can pull apart.

A Digitrax DZ-123 is perfect. Has just been replaced with the DZ-125
Has to be wired in as there is no plug.
2 caps must be removed.

HO / Re: 28 Speed Step DCC Decoders
January 25, 2009, 12:55:03 PM
Thank you for getting back to me.
The GP-35 unit is at the hobby shop.
We did not want to buy it until we know it will do 4 digits 128 speed step.
Since it just said 28 speed steps, we were Leary.
I have used and am happy with the 36-552 decoder  but have no idea if that
is  in the GP-35.
I don't think the follow at the hobby shop would be to happy about me taking the unit apart to see.
I have a Digitrax PR-3 programmer and have not had any  problems
programming  Bachmann decoders so far.

HO / 28 Speed Step DCC Decoders
January 22, 2009, 10:46:33 PM
Some of the older Bachmann units like the SD-45 GP-35 that are
DCC on board show 28 speed steps written on the box.
No mention if this will only support 2 digit address
or if one can program a 4 digit address on a 28 speed step unit.
Is this limited to a 2 digit address?
Thanks, Jim
