Quote...I'd be interested to know what camera you use to take the photos and if any special lens to get the depth of field?

Canon Rebel XT with a Sigma 18 - 200mm lens. I generally stop down to around f22 on the lens, as that seems to be the lens's "sweet spot" in terms of decent depth of field while still maintaining sharpness. Much smaller on the iris, and the image starts to get soft. Each lens will be different in that regard. The Sigma 18 - 200 is not a high-end lens, but it gets the job done. For posting on the web or printing at half page, it's more than adequate.

I think the first shot was taken with my old Minolta DiMage point-and-shoot. I've still got it; it does macro work much better than the Sigma lens lets me. Since the camera's smaller, I can put the lens almost literally in the door of a passenger car. On the point-and-shoots, just set the iris to the smallest size (largest number) possible and go from there.

Later,

K

K, thanks for the info. Your photos are always great and it is generally difficult to get a good range of the depth of field with larger sensor cameras. Some more recent 'art' Sigma is considered to be of pretty high range. BTW the link to your website on the photo does not work, you might want to fix this. The blog link does work fine. I am only going to consider getting one if they release it in the prototypical paint scheme of ET&WNC... Otherwise, it is just nonsense and a waste of time and money... Best wishes from Indoors, Zubi

You just have to face the reality folks. The era of Large Scale Boom is over. It is a miracle that there are still some plastic models produced for the European market. Other than that we should pray for Live Steam to survive for a few more years. Better learn some skills, scratchbuilding is fun. Best wishes from Indoors, Zubi

Some of tank cars stiil very reasonable, but boxes, gons only pop up now and then.  The long caboose seems to have gone K-27 way.  Easily close to MSRP used.

Chastity,
The caboose is fantastic. I guess it will go up in price in the future...

A certain other msnufacturer well importer of 1:20.3 is going to make a few more of the cleared out models but indicated maybe last runs.

Could you provide the source of this information?

Mickey, I do not think that G scale is down, by far not! Of course, a lot depends on how you define the scope of G-scale. But I wish I had the money to keep up with the new releases by KISS and LGB. Tons of wonderful stuff!! Not to mention live steam from Accucraft and Roundhouse, I am behind with that too. Sure, the market changed and keeps changing but G-scale (anywhere between 1:16 to 1:24) is doing pretty well considering the sad state of the planet and humanity.
For me too life got in a way of keeping up with the train hobby, but hopefully, things will get back on track soon;-). Great to hear that you are moving to Durango, I have been there once and can hardly think of a more inspiring place to keep focused on the hobby. If you do not plan an outdoor layout, there are a few people around there who have layouts, the hobby is best enjoyed in the company of others! Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Mark, scalewise, both models are fine representations of the originals! Of course, the scale is 1:22.5
Andrew, LGB Moguls are very durable and reasonable but not strong pullers, they will last forever...
Depending on the version your 4-6-0 may pull more or less, although it will probably not last long...
In real operation, a lot depends on your particular circumstances, grades, curvature weather etc, etc.
As for the snowplow, the original LGB snowplow is great but it is best installed using a few other parts.

If the Bach-man diversified, it would shake the large scale market to its core.

Not so easy, look at what happened to Brawa G-line..., European customers are extremely quality conscious! Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Aster does not make products for LGB any more. In fact, Aster is now made by Accucraft. Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Tom, to add to what Ted already wrote, LGB made far far more products to date than PIKO. Also more than Bachmann - at least in terms of model variety and probably also in terms of actual numbers sold (and many of them now available on the second hand market). Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Mike, excellent suggestion, albeit not realistic I fear. Still, you got hold of the laser cut kit - is it still available and who makes it? Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi

Ted, I can understand that, I prefer factory paint too. But not everything is possible and I do have some custom made models. I hope you will get your Flying Rio Grande and Moffat (sic) logo liveries, Zubi

Mr Ted, alternatively, you could learn to repaint and apply decals. BTW, 169 looks nothing like ET&NWC #12, but if Bachmann chooses to release it in your preferred liveries, why not! Best wishes from Tokyo, Zubi
