Thanks for the link. Lots of very interesting trains in that link. I spent another 2 - 3 hours searching the Internet for more info on some of those. That's the problem with the Internet, one thing leads to another and another and another.... :)

OK, so I ordered two new locos from eHattons along with some decoders and assorted bits and pieces. I received it all in 9 days time and in excellent condition. Hats off to eHattons and a very smooth transaction. I can recommend them based on this order.

P.S. - Check for their "Bargains", some of them are pretty good!  ;)

"I'd also see merit in focusing more on surviving NG engines and stock simply because an engine still operating or preserved intact must be familiar to a far greater number of people than something long gone for scrap."

Such as the K-28 and K-36 examples being used on the Durango & Silverton. Add in some of their passenger cars to that [shameless] wish list. I would buy several of each of those in On30 if Bachmann made them available.  :)

Unless you really have your heart set on controlling a firebox via a decoder, you might also consider using a simple $9 (for the DCC version) LED fire effect kit from Evan's Designs. I have a couple of these kits that I bought at a train show and am pretty happy with the effect. I have yet to put them permanently into a loco, only due to lack of time to devote to the project right now. But it is on my to do list and given the small size, I think it will all fit into an On30 loco fairly easily.

Its not all of testors brands that are going away, just some.

Yep, I understood that. However I couldn't find an "official announcement" on their website so I looked at their Facebook page which is awash with complaints. This rumor was apparently driven off an email sent to suppliers that someone leaked. A snippet of that email states: "Weve made the decision to exit the following businesses within the Testor® Brand family - Pactra®,
Floquil®, Polyscale®, and ColorArtz®."

I didn't think Pactra was also included in that, but there it is. Testors had even denied this rumor as late as May 13 that it wasn't true:

" Sometimes colors come and go Roger but we are not discontinuing PollyScale.

Later on they do acknowledge it on their FB page. I guess their Social Network Admin hadn't gotten the memo on the 13th.

Thanks for the feedback, y'all. I got to thinking the other day when someone was looking for the exploded parts diagram. I thought, man, it's right over on the other part of the website and commenced to giving them a link but when I got there.....it wasn't there! So then I started looking at my usual suppliers to see what they had in stock and was surprised to see rather little availability. Thus my conclusion that perhaps, just perhaps, Bachmann was ceasing production of my beloved (albeit troubled) Shay. And you're right. I should probably get what I want while I can. They have been in production for a while so maybe they have run their course.

This is sad news. I also have found the Floquil paints to be superior to others I have tried. It also has a certain odor that just tells me I'm working on the railroad. Growing up, I used a lot of Testors and Pactra paints on model cars and each had their own special odor that told me I was sitting at the workbench doing something I loved doing. [sigh] I for one, will definitely miss the brand.  :-[

On30 / Giving up the Shay?

Has Bachmann discontinued the On30 Shay?

There is only one model available via Bachmann's new online store. The Spot hasn't offered any in a long time. Micromark isn't listing them. Some other sites have them (at rather high prices in some cases) but say that they are discontinued when sold out. Some on eBay, but not many and again overpriced. Anyway it could just be my imagination but the supply of them seems to be dwindling. Did I miss a memo somewhere along the way?

That's a shame, Rick. It does sound like a faulty unit based on your description of the issue. Wish I could offer some more troubleshooting tips for you but I'm all out of gumdrops.  :(

Hi Rick,

I'm pretty sure that, in the case of a standard Dynamis system (i.e. NOT with a ProBox), the roster is stored in the handset. In the case of a ProBox system, those instructions say the rosters are stored in the ProBox and need to be uploaded (or updated) to the multiple handsets.

That being assumed for the moment, if you have the basic Dynamis as I do, the handset should be storing the roster. In my own experience, I have not had the roster disappear. That said, I don't think I have ever programmed more than 7 or 8 locos into it. I cannot say that has anything to do with it, just a comment. I do give the locos unique names and they do stay. I also take out the batteries in the handset when I don't use it for long periods. (like a few months) The only other habit I have that may be remarkable is that I always unplug power to the receiver when I'm not using it.

So I'm only responding to this as a fellow Dynamis user with a different experience than what you are describing. I hope you are able to sort it out and best of luck! Let us know how you make out.
