I've done samples from some engines, but not from the Climax.

Here you'll hear my sound artwork for the Bachmann Forney. On this sample you hear the single chime prototype whistle, but I've multichime versions too.

http://www.sound-design.white-stone.ch/Bachmann%20Forney.htm

Here you can see and hear my K-27 sound project in a Bachmann engine crossing a xxl trestle.

Hi Dave

in the left topcorner of the Zimo site you'll find the choice between German and English. John Russel translate the whole site and newsletters in his motherlanguage English.

I hope this will help you to unterstand the informations. On the sound data base you'll see all the sound projects.

The Zimo device is in principe a dcc decoder like the Phoenix too, but by the Zimo device the canmotor will be connected too. This way will give you a smooth running because the motor takes not notice of the 60 Hz riple of your bridge rectifier. Your dealer can set a limit of the top speed for double header use with his dcc system in programming mode.

I tested this dc operation mode once with a Forney and to my own surprise the added fan blown smoker was operating powered by the Zimo device with a blow out of a smoke clound by every chuff.

If you add a large capacitor to the device you get spare power, which helps you by a bad connection to the rails for some inches to arrive on good connectivity.

Hi Dave
I'm modellrailroader like you and I was searching 20 years for the really true sound. Ok before 5 years I got a Zimo device in my hands and I was beginnig to do my own sounds. www.Zimo.at was remarking the quality of my Climax sound with the ideling gears and asking me to give my sounds for another modellrailroaders too. Since this time I'm sound desinger for Zimo. I've done sounds for the most Bachmann large scale engine - all together 38 US sounds. One of them is the K-27. I recorded at the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic location Cisco tank for the chuff.
The Zimo device is a dcc component like phoenix too, which is made for best results with dc mode. The full power of 10 Watt is working with 3,5 Volt on the tracks.
A well known dealer in USA www.train-li-usa.com tells me 4/5 of my sounds are working on dc layouts with great sucession of the customers. The device is now to connect by wires, but Zimo works on a fitting device for the Bachmann plug-and-play socket, called MX 697.

I hope this informations will help you for your decissions.

I've finished now my own smoke stack. The hole has 10% more diameter, but the smoke don't leave the stack really good. It's a little bit better as with the genuine stack, but it's only a little fog not a smoke like it does without a stack.

Has somebody another idea to bring the smoke out of the stack?

Yes, the genuine stack has an edge of 90°. I've made a phase of 45°, but hasn't helpfull. I think the best way is to hit the Venturi geometrie of the inner side of the stack. See Wikipedia below Venturi. Each carburator of a car has a venturi tube inside.

I've beginning to make my own smoke stack on mi lathe, but maybe another one have a better idea.

Thank you Tom for the answer,

of corse the smoke unit is operating by the DCC decoder - what else? I actaully use a Zimo decoder with modulating heat voltage. The voltage change if the engine ist waiting, speed up or idling with constant speed. The Zimo decoder has a timer programmable by a CV adress for prevent the burn out of smoker. The smokeunit is well smoking if I pull out the stack through the hole in top of the smoke box. If I push back the stack in his hole, the smoke stay in the smoke box. A little bit of smoke comes out on the bottom of the smoke box. If I'm blowing into the stack a cloud of smoke leaves the smokebox below the bottom, but no smoke on the place where he should leave the stack.

I was testing with the smoke fluid from Seuthe, Magic smoke and SR 24 these 3 fluids are on stoke in Europe. I see no difference by my problem.

It' is not the smoke unit that don't work it's the small hole through the stack which stops the smoke

Large / Smoke don't come out of the stack

Hi
on my industrial Mogul the smoke of the smoker is staying inside the smoke box. If I remove the stake, the smoke comes out strong, but I put back the stack in his hole the smoke stays inside the smoke box. What can I do?

Hi
look, what I've done for a sound job for the little Bachmann Davenport.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJjNry70mZM

The sound decoder is a Zimo MX 645r, between the Bachmann pcb and the weight are 4 capacitors with 4.7 mF parallel installed, the sound project I've done myself.

The capacitors gives the safety of a free run without electric pickup for 4 inches in a slow speed. The capacitors are connected to the capacitors gain of the decoder.

The run is on another club members layout

Have fun

Hi

please take notice that I've done a Sound Project with genuine records taken at the cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway from the K-27 befor the gear was brocken.

The Sound Project is working on the Zimo DCC sound decoder family. I spent is K-27 project for free download. You'll find on www.zimo.at look on the sound data base and scroll down to the country USA and you'll find a lot of US Sound Projects for this top of the world DCC decoder.

I've done a lot of US Sound Projects: Heisler, Climax, Forney, Mogul, C-16, Teapot engine, Falks Gipsy engine - inclouding the sound of the winch, Logging Mallet, simple Articulateds, US Streetcar, Genesis and these weeks I'm still reworking my records taken by the yosemite Moutain Sugar Pine RR on my digital audio tape, for a museumquality Shay sound project for the Zimo DCC deocder. You'll get them all Wood Burner, Coal Burner and Oil Burner. But one highlight you should hear. It's the coldstart of my sound for the Bachmann Davenport - you'll get tears in the eyes about this winding starter engine...

The new generation of Zimo Sound Decoders will help you for engines from N to G-Scale, working on DCC and on DC too. The sound will start by the low limit of 3 Volt on track.

The decoder has a connector for cheap capacitors from Radioshack. You don't need expensive recharchable batteries which arriving the end of lifetime after some years. Most people changes to batterie and RC controll because they don't like a stopping engine by every little dirt on track. The capacitors are fullcharged in seconds not in hours and they have no problem if you don't charge for a long winter-time. Capacitors helps you to overrun dirty parts on track or plastic frogs with not a good conductivity of 4 to 8 inch length with the power from the capacitor. If you are stopping the engine and the decoder detect no voltage on track the engine will coast just voltage is back in the wheels.
Most impresive Test: My trackpowered Bachmann Climax with the Zimo DCC truesound and capacitors inside was running over a white letter laying the long way over the tracks, with slow motion speed, without any interrupt of motion and sound. But I was seeing 2 dark strips of the dirty wheels on the white paper.

Don't forgett this decoder has 4 connectors for servo to controll live steam engines too, using the sound of the prototyp. But you can use the servos too for opening the couplers or opening the waterhatch or swinig the bell. The Smoke generator electronic is installed on the Zimo Decoder and I've programmed all the values for connecting the heat resistor and the fan motor, to get your exhaustchuffs like the real thing. The price for them all is not more as for every another Sound Decoder.

I'm a modellrailraoder since I was a boy, but I'm a sound designer of Zimo too. If you remember PFM - that was my idea of a true sound.

Have fun
Heinz

Large / Re: Modifying K-27 to a pulsed smoker
November 18, 2010, 06:37:26 PM
Hi Udo,
mostly by an LGB engine I cut all the wiring out, because it's made to simple inside. Bachmann engines of the last years are much better wired, and I miss only one wire for the smoker fan from the decoder inside the tender to the engine.
I do not need any external trigger using the Zimo decoder. The internal trigger works perfect to the revolution of the driver and the smoke fan is driven from the trigger out of the Zimo decoder.
I'm using a tube between the smoke output and the smoke stake. One this way the smoke is leaving through the stake and stay not inside the boiler.
I'm thinking to cut the trigger wires away of the IR modules and using for the Smokefan.
I'm intersting to get some experiences and informations what is important to open the engine for access to this parts. Do you have some informations for me?
Most important for me is the using of a genuine protoype sound and not a generic one like ESU is doing.

Large / Modifying K-27 to a pulsed smoker
November 16, 2010, 10:08:55 AM
Hi

I got a brand new K-27 a Zimo DCC Sound-Decoder MX690V with the genuine K-27 Sound Project and a Pro Line pulsed smoke generator from train-li-usa.com.

Now I'm looking inside the tender and on the wiring diagramm from Bachmann. I have 11 wires between tender and engine. 2 of them I'll not needing. There are the wires for the IR chuff-trigger. There are only 2 chuffs per revolution and the Zimo Sound Decoder has an internal trigger which works perfect.

Has somebody an experience to open the K-27 for picking up the wires for the trigger to use with the pulsed smoker.

I'm thankfull for every good information.

Heinz

PS  I recorded the sound for this Zimo project from the 463 befor the gear was brocken.

Large / Re: is another big engine coming soon?

Hi to all,
wondefull modells Kevin. Accucraft is a very expensive brand. Most of us don't touch a modell in this price range. Nobody like to loose the collector value. Bachmann engines with their lower price as Accucraft are wonderfull material for such scratchbuilding fun as Kevin is showing us.

3 different scales for rolling stock.  ??? Since many decades of years we had 1:24 (US 1/2" to 1 foot) and the European Gauge IIm 1:22,5, known as LGB. Look in 25 years old Narrow Gauge & Short Line Gazettes and you'll find many half scale stock. We have since some years the back calculated scale of 45 mm model-trackgauge to 3 foot Narrow Gauge: 1:20,3.
With the falling down of LGB to a really small branch-business of the Märklin group, the scale 1:22,5  is no more really common for US NG.

The Aristo classic line with their C-16 is wonderfull. I have them all three genuine from Delton locomotive works. Originally they was constructed as halfscale 1:24, but I was in Gunisson climbing up on the 268 and took the prototype dimensions. In reality the cab hight is exactly 1:22,5. But these modells are really small at the side of 1:20,3 modells.

Some 1:22,5 rolling stock is now to small and has to be replaced by 1:20,3. Two ways to do that. Blow up 1:22,5 by scratchbuilding practice, or sold by ebay and buying new from Bachmann in the fitting scale. Which way is the better one? I think the answer is not for every modell the same. About these reasons I've postet my question about news of coming soon big prototype large scale engines like the Rio Grande engines.

Maybe somebody knows something about this topsecret affair  ::)

Hi
does anybody know what will the next large scale engine be? Till now we got the largest one ever built Bachmann engine, the Rio Grande K-27. What will coming next from Bachmann? A C-18, a C-19, a K-28 or maybe a K-36?
Does somebody knowing something about?

Large / Forney Chuff Trigger don't work
February 15, 2010, 09:06:57 PM
Hi Mr Bachmann

I'm on the way to install a Zimo MX 690S DCC sounddecoder. In this decoder the DCC power and the sound is in one only item, and the decoder is detecting the power consumation of the motor to adjust the sound volume. I've connecting J1-5 Chuff Trigger 1 with the switch input 3 of the sounddecoder. This input is producing a chuff every time if the switch input is connecting to ground. so too I've connecting  the J1-7 ground with the decoder ground
But it doesn't work till now.
Does i need to connect the locomtive 1 and ground with the decoders 1 and ground?

Thank you for helping

Large / Listen my sound of the new Forney
January 10, 2010, 01:19:23 PM
    Hi,
I am an enthusiastic model railroader and I am developing sound projects for my own Bachmann engines in museum quality. I don't like a simple adaption of some generic US Sounds. I've working with genuine Forney sound records of the W W & F Ry.

    These are the facts:

    • Prototypelike 4 hard chuffs per revolution,

    • singlechime whistle pitched to 5",

    • small bell,

    • 16 effects of the prototype operating by the remotecontrol
    • 6 random sounds.
    • synchron 5 Volt power output to each chuff for a smoke generator fan

The best of all you can have access to these project too. Listen the sound of your Forney on my website  http://www.sound-design.white-stone.ch/Bachmann%20Forney.htm
    Have fun
    Heinz
