well, your most likely better off with analog 
whilst DCC you have to buy a kit (about $ 200-500) and you need to install decoders ($20-40) and you must have some electrical knowledge or pay someone to do it (an extra $20).

DCC is a great way to control trains, but for someone on a budget, and new to the hobby might wan't to stick with "ye olde analog"

Don't give up on Gordon just yet.
Did you check it's wheels?
how about track?
If any of those two are dirty, then you most likely have poor electrical conductivity.
simple cleaning of the wheels, and track usually fixes that.
(rubbing alcohol is helpfull in cleaning wheels and track)
If that's not the problem,
get a phillips screw driver, and open it up to expose the gear box.
are the wires connected to the motor?
Is there any lubrication in the gears?
OR
Take it to your nearest hobby shop. They often fix/maintain engines at a decent price.
Better yet,
If you belong to a club, ask a member who has experience with
fixing engine, and ask him if he can diagnose the problem.
And that service is usually free, and very rewarding since you get a good idea on how they work.

The B'mann's E-Z command is a great affordable system.
But the problem is, It's not very expandable, and won't "grow" as your layout get's bigger.
But, if you have a limited room with a limited budget, That might be a great system for you.
Another system you might want to look into, is the NCE powercab.
It's easier to use than the Zephyr, and allows you to expand as your layout grows.
I use Digitrax and if it weren't for my friends help, I would have no idea on using it's full features.

while it's recommended to have something in between the track and  the carpet (such as cardboard, or using track with integrated roadbed.)
Alot   of modern day engines have enclosed gearboxes. (but do expect to get junk stuck in there eventually)

skullzproduction,the railway inspecter and captain punjab.

BTW the videos (if you dont already know what im talking about) are
thomas episodes but instead of using the footage they use their own hornby/bachmann models engines.
