So if I understand you correctly, I can set up a separate short section of track to program the CV values of equipment using a decoder like Digitrax.

HO / Sound Upgrade Recommendations
February 03, 2025, 03:32:52 PM
After purchasing a DCC sound locomotive, I want to upgrade my existing DCC-Equipped locomotives with a sound board.
I thought I would start with my Bachmann DCC-Equipped EMD GP40 locomotive that came with the Digital Commander set that I bought last year.
Is it as easy as removing the existing DCC board (H633Y+PCB01) and replacing it with a suitable replacement?
Also, I realize that this is a Bachmann forum, but could you make any recommendations on which sound boards you like the best.

Yesterday I went over every section of track and I found a couple of misaligned rail connections. I also repositioned one of my crossovers so that there are 2-9" straight sections before it and 2-9" straight sections after it. I checked the wheels on the passenger cars and set them so that the heaviest car is last. And guess what? No more derailments. I ran the train for at least 1/2 hour at different speeds and it worked perfectly. Thank you all for your suggestions. I have copied them into a Word document and printed it to keep with my layout.

One more question if you don't mind. Do any of you set your tracks with glue or caulking? I've seen a few YouTube videos where the person sets their tracks with caulk after final layout and testing.

HO / Observations from a Newby
January 31, 2025, 05:54:48 PM
I am in the process of setting up and testing my trains on my layout which consists of all Bachmann EZ track. I have two large oval loops that are interconnected via an LCO #6 DCC and an RCO #6 DCC on the straight runs. The outer loop has 22"/22.5 deg curves and the inner loop has 18"/30 deg curves.
For my passenger train I purchased three passenger cars (85' Budd) from another manufacturer. I added weights to the passenger cars to bring them within the specs of proper weight for their length. They are being pulled by a Bachmann Amtrak Cascades #1400 locomotive.
Here are my observations:
Whichever passenger car is last, it will derail usually going through one of the crossovers. I have looked over the crossovers and cannot see any major issues. I've watched a few videos on YouTube concerning the issues with weak spring steel.
My freight cars run fine over the crossovers.
If I run the passenger cars on the outer loop with the 22"/22.5 deg curves, I will get an occasional derailment. If I run them on the inner loop with the 18"/30 degree curves, I have no problems with the passenger cars.
None of my shorter freight cars have any problems on either loop.
So, what am I doing wrong?
Will a more expensive passenger car perform better?
Should I consider replacing the spring steel in my expensive crossovers?
Thank you all for your insight and experience.

HO / Re: Need Extra Weight for Passenger Cars?

Reading through some old posts it looks like this is a continuous problem. Some people add weights and some people have modified their turnouts by adding a stiffer wire to the turnout. Any other recommendations are appreciated.

HO / Need Extra Weight for Passenger Cars?
January 20, 2025, 06:25:55 PM
I finally have all of my E-Z track purchased and I am testing my layout with my rail cars. Part of my layout includes a Bachmann 44137 HO E-Z Command DCC #6 Single Crossover Turnout Left and a Bachmann 44138 HO E-Z Command DCC #6 Single Crossover Turnout Right. I thought that I might have trouble with my passenger cars going through the switchover angles. So far so good. However I am having an issue with the passenger rail cars derailing while going straight through this piece of track. I am testing them at a very slow speed. If I manually test each car by itself I can see where the wheels slide as they encounter the switch rail. If I push down slightly on the passenger car it seems to pass the switch rail with no issues. This happens on both left and right crossover turnouts. I do not have the problem with my Bachmann freight cars and they seem to have some weight to them as compared to the longer passenger cars. It would seem that if I could add a little weight over the passenger car wheels, it may solve this issue. Has anyone tried this before?

In my layout, I plan on using an LCO #6 DCC and an RCO #6 DCC. I was hoping to save a little cost by using analog remote turnouts (44561 and 44562) instead of the more expensive DCC turnouts (44130 and 44141). I would use a separate 16 VAC power source to operate the turnouts. Am I correct in that this won't cause a problem with the DCC components? Thanks for your assistance.

So I purchased the Bachmann 10' Power Extension Cable (#44498) and it came with one male connection and one female connection.
Both of my terminal tracks have male connections on either side. It appears that the extension cable should have two female connections.
Am I missing something?

Will I need a second power source or can I power two terminal rail sections from one controller?

Thank you Len. I didn't ask it on their website because I knew what their answer would be. I would think that if there were any small LED's that are 24 VDC, they should work. I went with their system so I didn't have to build my one from scratch.

With a layout of this size, will I need additional power for the track (separate transformer) or can I simply add an additional terminal section and tie it in to the EZ Command power source?

I was wondering if anyone knew if I could use other (3rd party) LED lights with the Woodland Scenics Just Plug lighting system?

Same here. I was probably 11 or 12 when I was using old 110VAC Christmas lights to put under the snap together plastic buildings that we had for our American Flyer train set.

With the increase of online shopping, it gets more difficult for brick and mortar stores to stay open. I went to the ONE hobby store that we have in our area and he is no longer carrying any model train stock. He has paints and some scenery, but that's it.
